Well, if you ever find yourself near Winchester Bay, ya might wanna try fishin’. It’s a right good spot, I tell ya. Ain’t nothing like spendin’ a nice day out there on the water, whether you’re on the Umpqua River or out there in the big ol’ Pacific Ocean. Now, if you’re askin’ what kind of fish you can catch, let me tell ya, there’s plenty!
Now, first off, let’s talk about them salmon. That Umpqua River’s got some real good fishin’ for Chinook and Coho salmon. You gotta time it right though. The spring Chinook, they run from March all the way to mid-June. But if you miss that, don’t worry, ’cause them fall Chinook come in around late July, and they stick around till November. A good time for fishin’ on the Umpqua for sure!
And don’t forget about the steelhead! Them fish are out there year round in the main part of the Umpqua River. I know folks who’ve been out there catchin’ them steelhead all year long, and let me tell ya, it’s a sight to see those beautiful fish. They sure do put up a good fight!
Now, if you’re more into catchin’ fish with a little more bite, then you’ll wanna try for some Pink Fin Perch. They sure are tasty, and you can find ’em right there in Winchester Bay. The Reedsport charter folks also do a good job takin’ people out to catch Dungeness crabs and Red Rock crabs. Ain’t nothin’ like a good ol’ crab boil after a long day on the water.
So, if you’re wonderin’ about the best time to go fishin’, it ain’t all year round for everything. The salmon, as I said, are best in the spring and the fall. But those steelhead, well, you can catch ’em just about any ol’ time. And if you head out to Diamond Lake, you’ll be able to catch yourself some nice rainbow trout, even if the weather’s a bit chilly. They tend to hide out in the deeper water, so you might need to cast a little farther.
And while we’re talkin’ ’bout fishing reports, if you’re lookin’ for up-to-date info, there’s always a good report to check out. In fact, the September 2024 fishing reports were sayin’ the fishin’ in Winchester Bay’s been real good lately. People were pullin’ in some big catches, especially for the fall Chinook. If you’re in the area, you should check out what’s bitin’ right now. And don’t forget to check out the March 2023 reports too, ’cause there’s always somethin’ new happenin’ in the waters around there.
Winchester Bay ain’t just about fishin’ either. It’s a beautiful spot on the Oregon Coast. You can go and take in the sights, and if you want a little more action, you can head down to Coos Bay, not too far away. There’s plenty to do and see, but trust me, fishin’ at Winchester Bay will be somethin’ you won’t forget.
So, whether you’re a seasoned fisherman or just lookin’ for somethin’ fun to do, Winchester Bay is the place to be. Grab your gear, pack up the family, and head on over to catch some of the best fish the Oregon Coast has to offer. You won’t be disappointed, I promise ya that!
