You go down that pier, and you’ll be settin’ up to catch some big ol’ crabs—especially in the warmer months, like August and September when they’re runnin’ good.
So, first thing ya need to know is, it’ll cost ya ten dollars per person to crab or fish out there. The lady comes ‘round, asks for your money. Ain’t no gettin’ around it, but it’s worth it if you’re lookin’ for a peaceful day by the water. And if ya plan on comin’ back more than once, you can grab yourself a seasonal pass for just twenty-five bucks.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ the water’s all clean and sparkly. Nope, it’s lookin’ a little murky, so don’t go thinkin’ you can eat what you catch unless you’re real sure. But if you’re just out there for some fun, it’s perfect. I’ve spent many a day out there, just enjoyin’ the sunshine and waitin’ for the crabs to bite. Ain’t that what life’s all about? The best time to get out there? Well, let me tell ya, early mornin’ is prime time. Once the sun comes up higher, those crabs start to get a little lazy and drop off the line. But if you’re usin’ traps, time ain’t as important. Still, the tide’s gotta be right, y’know? It’s best to crab when the tide’s comin’ in. Trust me on that one—keeps them crabs comin’ right to you.
And don’t worry too much if the day’s slow—like I always say, the worst day crabbing is still better than a good day at work. Ain’t nothing like the feel of a fishin’ pole in your hands and the smell of the sea in the air. You can set up with two poles, one trap on each, or just one pole with two traps. Whatever works for you.
If you feel like tryin’ some other spots, the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers are mighty good for crabbing, and Barnegat Bay, Toms River, and Egg Harbor ain’t bad either. But that West End Ave Crabbing Pier? Well, that’s where the locals go, and if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me!
So pack up your gear, grab a couple of friends, and head on down to the West End Ave Crabbing Pier. Ain’t no better way to spend a day.
