Man, lemme tell ya, fishin’ ain’t what it used to be. Back in my day, you’d just throw somethin’ in the water and BAM, fish on the line! Now, these young folks with their fancy gear and their “d&g bait” talk, makes an old lady like me scratch my head. What’s all the fuss about? I tell ya, fish ain’t got no taste for fancy names, they just want somethin’ tasty.
Heard some fellas talkin’ about “enhancin’ bait.” What’s that even mean? They sayin’ fish got picky? We used to use worms and such, dug ’em right outta the ground. Now they talk about “fresh bait,” “lures,” “drifters,” all sorts of stuff. And don’t get me started on “jigs” and “flies.” Sounds like a whole lotta work to me.
- Worms
- Little fish
- Bread balls
That’s what we used. Simple, easy. Now they talkin’ ’bout “nightcrawlers,” “salmon eggs,” “sand shrimp,” “cured prawns”… Sounds like a fancy restaurant menu! And what’s this “sturgeon candy”? You tellin’ me fish like candy now? My grandpappy would turn in his grave hearin’ all this.
They say this “Guide’s Choice cured bait” is the best thing since sliced bread. For salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, trout, catfish… all sorts of fish! They say saltwater fish eat it like candy too. Hmph! Must be some kinda magic potion they puttin’ in there.
Then there’s these “Googan baits.” Soft plastic lures, they say. Bugs, craws, worms, darts… all made outta plastic! What happened to the real deal? And these hard lures too, “jigs,” “crankbaits,” “swimbaits”… I tell ya, it’s enough to make your head spin.
Now, some folks use these “pilchards.” Little fish, they say, in the herring family. They got these “blue baits” and “fresh frozen” ones. One’s salted, one’s not. For surf fishin’ and offshore fishin’. Seems complicated, don’t it? Back in my day, a fish was a fish, didn’t matter if it was surf or offshore.
They say these baits, natural or “artificial,” work just the same if you pick the right one. The size, the type, the way you use it… all matters. Well, I reckon that’s true for anythin’ in life. But still, all these choices, all these names… it’s too much for an old lady like me.
These “pilchards,” they’re like “scaled sardines,” grow to six inches. They say they’re good for all sorts of fish. And folks get ’em mixed up with “Thread Herring.” I tell ya, it’s like a whole different language these young folks speak. Fishin’ used to be simple, now it’s like you need a dictionary just to understand what they talkin’ about.
So, this “d&g bait,” whatever it is, I reckon it’s just another one of them fancy things. If it catches fish, good for you. But don’t forget the simple ways. A worm on a hook, a quiet spot by the water… that’s all you really need. Don’t let all this fancy talk fool ya. Fishin’ ain’t about the bait, it’s about the patience, the quiet, the joy of catchin’ somethin’ with your own two hands.
