First thing you gotta know is where to go. Folks say down where the river dumps into that big ol’ Lake Erie is good. Lotsa walleye swimmin’ around there, ‘specially when they’re makin’ babies in the spring. You look for spots where the water gets deep real quick, like where it drops off. Fish like to hang out there.
Now, ’bout what to use. Heard some fellas usin’ them blue ice lunker city 4 finesse minnows and catchin’ a mess of perch. And if you’re fishin’ from the shore, jiggin’ for walleye seems to work. That Riverside park place, folks catchin’ fish there.
They got rules, ya know. Can’t just catch all the walleye you want. ‘Til April 30th, you can only keep six. They say it’s the same in Erie, Detroit River, Lake St. Clair and St. Clair River. Don’t go breakin’ the rules, now.
- Figure out where the walleye are bitin’. There’s maps and stuff that show ya. Don’t ask me how they work, just use ’em.
- Water’s gotta be the right temp. Heard it was just over 40 degrees, and things are gonna get busy soon. Fish gonna be swimmin’ all over the place.
- You can watch videos on jiggin’ and trollin’ for walleye. Might learn somethin’. I ain’t got time for that, but you might.
People sayin’ they catchin’ their limit of walleye and perch. Means they catchin’ all they’re allowed. Must be good fishin’ right now.
So, there ya have it. That’s the Detroit River walleye report, plain and simple. Go find a spot, use the right bait, and follow the rules. You might just catch yourself some dinner.
