Well, I tell ya, bass sure are a tricky bunch, ain’t they? They ain’t like them catfish or bluegill you catch easy down by the river. Bass got themselves a taste, you know, a proper picky one. But let me tell ya, after all these years of seein’ folks tryin’ to catch ’em, I got a few things to say about what they like to nibble on.
First off, bass, they love to eat things that move around. You won’t find ‘em goin’ after them still, quiet critters much. Nah, they like somethin’ that wiggles and squirms, somethin’ that’s alive. They get all excited about that kinda movement. So, if you’re fishin’ for bass, you gotta be throwin’ somethin’ that looks like it’s got a bit of life left in it.
What Do Bass Like to Eat?
- Small Fish: Bass, they love little fish. Shad, bluegill, or them minnows, you toss one of them in the water, and it won’t be long before you got yourself a bite. They ain’t too proud to go after ’em, no sir.
- Worms: Now, worms, they’re a good ol’ standby. Bass love ‘em, especially the night crawlers. You put one of them on a hook, and you better hold on tight ’cause you’re in for a fight.
- Crayfish: If you got yourself a good ol’ crayfish, bass won’t turn up their nose at it. They love crawlin’ critters like that, especially if you find yourself fishin’ around some rocky bottom or near a creek mouth.
- Insects: Don’t forget about the bugs! Them little insects buzzin’ around the water, they catch the bass’s eye too. Dragonflies, beetles, any kind of critter that might fall in the water, you can bet the bass is gonna take a swing at it.
- Frogs: Now, I know this might sound a bit strange, but bass sure do like them frogs. Yup, you throw a frog lure out there, and you can bet your bottom dollar a bass might just come up and try to grab it. They’ll take a bite right outta that frog if they see it sittin’ on the water’s surface.
But here’s somethin’ folks don’t always think about. It ain’t just about what they eat, it’s about when they eat it. You see, bass are smart creatures, and they ain’t always gonna be snappin’ at every little thing you throw at ‘em. They like to eat at certain times of day when they feel like it’s safe, like early in the mornin’ or late in the evening when the water’s a little cooler. You gotta be ready to throw your bait when the time’s right.
Also, bass, they ain’t always gonna be on the hunt. Nope, sometimes they just want to hang out, restin’ in the weeds or under them rocks, waitin’ for somethin’ to swim by. So, don’t go thinkin’ you’re gonna catch ’em every time. You gotta know when they’re hungry and what makes ’em feel like chasin’ after somethin’.
How to Catch ‘Em
Now, if you’re serious about catchin’ bass, you gotta think like one. They got their moods, just like folks do. Sometimes they want somethin’ fast and furious, like them crankbaits or spinnerbaits that move real quick. Other times, you gotta slow it down with a soft plastic worm or a jig that just kinda sinks down into the water, lookin’ real quiet and subtle.
Another trick is to match the hatch. What that means is, you gotta know what them bass are used to seein’ around the waters you fish in. If they’re used to eatin’ little minnows, well, you better toss somethin’ that looks like a minnow. If it’s a lotta crawfish in the area, use a crawfish-like bait. It’s all about knowin’ what they like and givin’ it to ’em the way they expect it.
And don’t forget, sometimes bass can be a little shy, especially in clear water. They might see your bait and just swim on by. So, you gotta try different techniques, maybe even switch up your baits until you find the one that gets ’em to bite. It ain’t always easy, but when you finally hook one, boy, it sure feels good!
Do Bass Feel Emotions?
Now, I ain’t no scientist, but I’ve been around long enough to know that bass are smarter than folks give ‘em credit for. I hear some folks talkin’ about how fish can feel things, like emotions. Some studies even say that fish might have feelings, like fear or pleasure. Bass, I reckon, can tell when somethin’ ain’t right, or when they’re in danger. They sure got a way of avoidin’ trouble when they sense it.
So, if you ask me what bass like, I’d say they like to feel safe, they like a good meal, and they like a bit of excitement every now and then. You gotta keep that in mind when you’re out there fishin’. The bass don’t always want what’s easiest, they want what feels right, what’s gonna give ‘em the most bang for their buck.
Well, I reckon that’s about all I got to say on the matter. Now, if you’re out fishin’ for bass, I wish ya the best of luck. Just remember what I told ya—throwin’ a worm, a frog, or a little fish in the water at the right time might just do the trick. And if you’re lucky, you’ll land yourself a big ol’ bass!
