Well now, if you ain’t heard of jigging for king salmon, let me tell you, it’s a mighty fine way to catch them big ol’ fish! Folks out here know how to make it work, and I’m gonna tell you all about it, so sit down and listen up.
First off, when you’re jigging for them kings, you gotta have the right kind of jig. It ain’t no use throwing out just any ol’ thing. You need a lure that’s got some weight to it, but not too heavy that it don’t move right in the water. It’s gotta drop fast and get down deep where them big king salmon like to hang out. But also, when you lower that lure, you want it to flutter a bit. That’s what gets their attention. I tell you, a good Puget Pounder is one of the best jigs for the job. If you can get your hands on one of them, you’re halfway there!
Now, another thing I gotta tell ya is when you’re fishing on the rivers, like for the king salmon in the Puget Sound, you might want to try trolling with a banana-shaped plug. Now, I ain’t no expert fisherman, but I’ve seen plenty of folks who swear by that method. They even wrap their plugs with sardines or anchovies to make ’em smell real good and draw the fish in. I reckon a hungry salmon won’t turn down that treat!
When it comes to speed, don’t go too fast or too slow. If you’re trolling, anywhere from 1.8 to 3 miles per hour is just about right. Now, I’ve heard tell of people going up to 4 miles per hour, especially out there on the Great Lakes, but I think the most important thing is findin’ that sweet spot. Once you get the speed just right, you’re bound to get a bite. Trust me on that one.
Vertical jigging works real good too, especially when you’re fishin’ by the mouths of tributaries. This is especially true in the earlier part of the run, when the fish ain’t as deep. You can use a big ol’ blade bait like a 3/4 ounce Fish Sense Binsky. It’s got a good size and weight, and you can feel it in your hands as you jig it up and down. The salmon, they can feel it too, and they’ll come right for it if they’re hungry.
If you ever find yourself down at Pere Marquette Lake, well, you just might get lucky with some king salmon. The thrill of jigging for them big fish is somethin’ you won’t forget! It’s all about patience and timing. If you can find the right spot and get your jig in front of a hungry king, there’s nothing like the fight when that fish bites. Oh, and don’t forget to take some advice from the experts around you. They know a thing or two about making it work.
And speaking of jigging, Lake Ontario has been just chock full of king salmon, especially in the last couple of years. The jig bite there has been so good that folks can’t stop talkin’ about it. Some of ’em are so hooked on it, they can’t wait to get back out there every chance they get. It’s a whole experience, I tell ya!
So, if you want to get in on this jigging business, don’t waste no time. Get yourself the right jigs, find that perfect speed, and head out to a good fishing spot. Whether you’re on the river, by the tributaries, or out on the lake, there’s a king salmon out there waiting for you. You just gotta put in the time, and when you do, you’ll be reeling in fish like nobody’s business!
