Alright, let me tell ya ’bout fishin’ in that St. Johns River down Jacksonville way. I ain’t no fancy fisherman, but I know a thing or two ’bout catchin’ fish, ya hear?
Now, that river, it’s somethin’ else. Big ol’ thing, lots of places for fish to hide. Folks say it’s deep in some spots, like forty feet deep! Can ya imagine? That’s deeper than my well, I tell ya! And the water, it moves with the tides, goin’ in and out, bringin’ the fish with it.
What kinda fish you gonna catch? Well, there’s plenty, I reckon. Them redfish, they’re good eatin’. And flounder, flat as a pancake, but tasty all the same. Spotted trout, they call ’em speckled trout too, them’s fun to catch. Sheepshead, they got teeth like, well, sheep! But they fight good, and they taste good too.
If you go north a bit, where the river meets the ocean, you might find snook. Them’s fighters, I tell ya. And tarpon, big silver fish, jumpin’ all over the place. Heard tell there’s even sharks out there, but I ain’t messin’ with them, no sir!
- Redfish
- Flounder
- Spotted Trout
- Sheepshead
- Snook (further north)
- Tarpon (further north)
- Maybe even sharks (way out yonder)
Now, how you gonna catch ’em? Well, you gotta have bait, that’s for sure. Worms work good, and chicken liver, the fish seem to like that stink. Shrimp is good too, and sometimes them little fish, minnows they call ’em. You can use them fake baits too, the plastic ones, but I like the real stuff myself.
When’s the best time to go fishin’? Well, that’s a good question. Some folks say early mornin’ or late evenin’, when the sun ain’t so hot. But I reckon you can catch fish any time, if you know what you’re doin’. There’s even apps now, tellin’ you when the fish are bitin’. Fancy stuff, I tell ya. But me, I just go when I feel like it.
Folks been catchin’ lots of fish lately, hear tell. August was good, and even now, in February and March, they’re still catchin’ them redfish, big ones too. And sheepshead, they’re bitin’ good on certain tides, whatever that means. I just go fishin’, I don’t pay much mind to them tides.
Where to go fishin’ in that river? Well, it’s big, like I said. You can fish from the shore, or get yourself a boat. Lots of folks fishin’ near the Main Street Bridge, I hear. There’s places up north too, near Nassau Sound. Just gotta find a spot that looks fishy, ya know?
And don’t forget, you gotta follow the rules. They got rules ’bout how many fish you can keep, and how big they gotta be. Don’t wanna get yourself in trouble with the game warden, no sir. They don’t take kindly to folks breakin’ the rules.
So there ya have it, a little somethin’ ’bout fishin’ in the St. Johns River. It ain’t fancy, but it’s the truth, as far as I know it. Go on out there and wet a line, maybe you’ll catch yourself somethin’ good to eat. Just remember to be patient, and have fun. That’s what fishin’s all about, ain’t it?
