Alright, let’s talk about fishin’ at Rend Lake, Illinois. I ain’t no fancy writer, so I’m just gonna tell it to ya straight, like I’m talkin’ to ya over a cup of coffee.
Rend Lake Fishin’ – What’s the Big Deal?
Folks keep askin’ me about Rend Lake, so I figured I’d spill the beans. It’s a big ol’ lake, see? Some parts are deep, some ain’t. Up north, past that Route 154, it’s kinda shallow, maybe ten feet or less. But lemme tell ya, that’s where the fish like to hang out. Good fishin’ spots, they are.
What Kind of Fish You Gonna Catch?
Well, there’s all sorts, I tell ya. Lots of folks like them crappie. Heard tell there was a new record crappie caught there not too long ago. Big fella, it was! Bigger than any crappie I ever seen. They say it was caught on some fancy jig and craw thing, but I just use worms mostly. Works just fine, I reckon.
- Crappie: They got white crappie, black crappie, all kinds. You can keep 25 of ’em, if you’re lucky enough to catch that many.
- Bass: Oh yeah, they got bass too. Big ones and little ones. Fight like heck, they do.
- Catfish: Now, catfish, them’s my favorite. Big ol’ bottom feeders. Tastes mighty good fried up.
- Bluegill: Little fellas, but fun to catch. Kids love ’em.
When’s the Best Time to Go Fishin’?
Now, that’s the million-dollar question, ain’t it? Fishin’ can be funny sometimes. One day they bitin’ like crazy, the next day, nothin’. But I heard tell early mornin’ and late evenin’ are good times. Somethin’ about the sun, I guess. And that fella on the radio, he says somethin’ about the fish bein’ active around six to eight in the mornin’, noon to one, and six to eight at night. Sounds about right to me.
Rend Lake Fishin’ Forecast – What’s the Weather Gonna Do?
You gotta watch the weather, that’s for sure. Fish don’t like it too windy or too stormy. And you don’t wanna be out there in a thunderstorm, neither. So, check the forecast before you go. Plenty of places to find it these days, on the internet and all that.
Tips for Fishin’ at Rend Lake
Alright, here’s a few things I learned over the years. First off, find a good spot. Like I said, up north of Route 154 is good, but there’s other places too. Ask around, folks are usually happy to share some tips, long as you don’t go fishin’ in their honey hole.
Second, use the right bait. Worms are always a good bet, but sometimes them fish want somethin’ else. Minnows, crickets, even little lures. Experiment a little, see what works.
Third, be patient. Fishin’ ain’t always easy. Sometimes you gotta sit there for a while, waitin’ for them fish to bite. But that’s part of the fun, I reckon. Just sittin’ there, relaxin’, enjoyin’ the peace and quiet.
Goin’ Fishin’ with a Guide
Now, if you’re new to fishin’ or new to Rend Lake, you might wanna hire a guide. There’s this fella, Captain Jason, he runs fishin’ trips out there. Knows the lake like the back of his hand, he does. Can put you right on the fish. Worth considerin’, if you got the money.
Fishin’ Regulations – Don’t Get in Trouble
One more thing, make sure you know the rules. Gotta have a fishin’ license, and you gotta follow the size and limit regulations. Don’t wanna get a ticket, do ya? They got rules about how many fish you can keep and how big they gotta be. Check the regulations before you go, just to be safe.
So, there you have it. That’s my Rend Lake fishin’ report, plain and simple. It’s a good lake, lots of fish, pretty scenery. Go on out there and give it a try. And if you see me out there, be sure to say howdy. Just don’t go fishin’ in my spot and we’ll be just fine, you hear?
