Howdy folks! Today, I’m gonna yap a bit about fishing down Matagorda Bay way. I ain’t no fancy fisherman, mind you, just an old gal who loves to wet a line. But I hear things, you know? Folks talkin’ down at the bait shop, seein’ pictures on them phones… so here’s what I reckon is the lowdown on fishin’ in Matagorda Bay.
Matagorda Bay Fishin’ Spots: Where Them Fish At?
Now, this bay, it’s a big ol’ place. You got East Matagorda Bay and West Matagorda Bay. Sounds fancy, but it just means two sides of the same water, near as I can tell. I hear tell East Matagorda Bay is FAIR right now. Means you might catch somethin’, might not. Water’s about 62 degrees, which I guess is neither here nor there for the fish.
Them redfish, they’re kinda like me followin’ the shrimp trucks – they’re followin’ the shrimp out into the middle of the bay. Trout’s pretty good out there too, in the middle. And if you like them black drum, they’re hangin’ around the shell reefs, plenty of ‘em.
- Redfish: Out in the middle chasin’ shrimp.
- Trout: Middle of the bay, same as the redfish.
- Black Drum: Near them shell reefs, easy pickin’s.
Out in Port Aransas way, I hear them big ol’ redfish are bitin’ on shiny spoons, shrimp, and cut-up mullet. Trout’s good too, if you toss some shrimp near the rocks. And them black drum and snapper, they like shrimp too, down at the jetties. Lots of jetties down there, can’t miss ‘em.
What Bait to Use? Keep it Simple, Stupid!
Now, don’t go gettin’ all fancy with your baits. Them fish ain’t picky. Live shrimp seems to be the ticket for most things. I hear folks usin’ croakers too, and them redfish down in Port Aransas, they like them silver spoons and cut mullet or skip jack. Whatever that is. Sounds fishy to me, ha! Just keep it simple, that’s what I say. Don’t need no fancy-dancy lures, just good ol’ bait.
When to Go Fishin’? After the Weather, That’s When!
Fishin’ ain’t always good, you know. Sometimes them fish just ain’t bitin’. But I hear tell the best time to go is after one of them cold fronts passes through. That high pressure, it messes with the fish, I guess. So you wait for it to pass, then get out there. That’s when they start bitin’ again.
What Kinds of Fish You Gonna Catch?
Well, I already told you about the redfish, trout, and black drum. But you might catch other stuff too. Some folks say they catchin’ sand trout, gafftop, and them big ol’ croakers. And even though you can’t keep ‘em right now, there’s plenty of flounder around for catch and release. Just throw ‘em back, let ‘em grow bigger for next time.
Matagorda Bay Fishin’ Reports: Listen to the Folks Who Know
Now, I ain’t the only one talkin’ about fishin’. There’s fellas out there, captains they call ‘em, who go out fishin’ every day. Guys like Captain David Dillman, he’s always yappin’ about what’s bitin’ in Galveston Bay, which ain’t too far from Matagorda. And Captain Zack Shannon, he’s got his charters over in Matagorda. They put out these fishin’ reports, tellin’ you where the fish are and what they’re bitin’ on. Smart folks listen to them reports, saves you time and trouble. You don’t wanna be sittin’ all day with no fish, do ya?
Other Fishin’ in Texas: Lakes, Lakes, and More Lakes!
And if the bay ain’t your thing, well, Texas is full of lakes. Thousands of ‘em, I hear. So if you like freshwater fishin’, you got plenty of choices. But that’s a whole ‘nother story for another day. Today, we talkin’ about Matagorda Bay.
Matagorda Bay Fishin’: Fun for Everyone!
So, there you have it. A little bit of what I know about fishin’ in Matagorda Bay. It ain’t rocket science, just get yourself some bait, find a good spot, and wet a line. And who knows, you might just catch yourself a big ‘un! It’s all about havin’ fun and enjoyin’ the outdoors, that’s what I always say. So get out there and give it a try! And remember, keep it simple and listen to them fishin’ reports!
