Alright, listen up, y’all. Gonna tell ya ’bout fishin’ in that there Hudson River. Folks call ’em stripers, big ol’ fish, ya know? Good eatin’ too.
Where to Find ‘Em Stripers, Now
Now, I ain’t no fancy fisherman with all them gadgets, but I know a thing or two ’bout where these stripers hang out. Heard tell up north, past that Federal Dam, that’s where they be. Lotsa weeds and trees fallen in the water, that’s where they like to hide. Makes sense, right? Fish gotta hide from bigger fish, just like us folks gotta hide from trouble.
Further up that river, Hamilton County way and that Hudson River Gorge, they say it’s real good fishin’ up there. Catskill, too. That’s a fishin’ town, they say. Lots of bass, and them stripers too, I reckon. You go up there, you gonna catch somethin’, sure as I’m sittin’ here.
Them Herrings and Such
Now, these stripers, they like to eat. And what they like most is them herrings. Little fish, swim in big groups. Easy pickin’s for a big striper. So, if you wanna find them stripers, you gotta find them herrings.
- Herrings be bait. Stripers love ’em.
- Troy docks? Heard tell folks catch herrings there. Not sure if they still there now, but worth a look-see.
When Them Stripers Come Around
Fishin’ ain’t always good, ya know? Gotta be the right time. Them stripers, they start movin’ up that river in March or April, they say. That’s when them herrings come in to lay their eggs, or whatever fish do. And the stripers follow, hungry as can be.
Heard tell on the radio, some fellas talkin’ ’bout striper fishin’. Said they seen some big ones, 28 to 35 inches long, down near New York City. Said them smaller ones, they call ’em “schoolies”, they headin’ east and north, through that Long Island Sound. So, they be movin’ all over, these fish.
Just Fishin’ Talk, Ya Know?
Folks be talkin’ ’bout this Hudson River all the time. Some fella even moved up there, said he wanted to look at that river every day. Must be somethin’ special ’bout it. I ain’t never been that far up, but I hear it’s pretty. And the fishin’, well, that’s the main thing, ain’t it?
Three-year-old stripers, now, they be ’bout 18 inches long, they say. Still growin’, those fellas. Gotta let ’em grow big, so you can catch ’em later, right? That’s what my pappy always told me.
Heard tell there’s a group of fellas, “Cooperative Anglers” they call themselves. They be keepin’ track of them stripers, reportin’ where they be and how many they catchin’. Sounds fancy, but I reckon it’s just fishin’, same as I do, just they writin’ it down.
So, that’s the story on them Hudson River stripers, as far as I know it. You wanna catch ’em, you gotta go where they be, use the right bait, and be there at the right time. And most important, you gotta be patient. Fishin’ ain’t always easy, but it’s always worth it, even if you just come home with a good story.
One more thing, them bridges up there, they be closin’ at sunset, so don’t get stuck on the wrong side, ya hear?
