Alright, let’s talk about catchin’ them bass in the late fall, when the weather starts gettin’ nippy. You know, when the leaves are fallin’ and the wind’s a-blowin’. I ain’t no fancy fisherman with all them highfalutin’ words, but I know a thing or two about gettin’ them fish on the hook.
The Best Lures for Late Fall Bass
Now, there’s a whole bunch of lures out there, makes your head spin just lookin’ at ’em. But for late fall, you gotta use the right stuff, ya hear? Here’s what I been usin’ that seems to work pretty good.
- Topwater Lures: These are the ones that float on top, you know, like a little frog or somethin’. Bass like to come up and smack ’em, especially early in the mornin’ or late in the evenin’ when it’s a bit cooler. Just toss it out there and wiggle it around a bit. Keep your rod tip low to the water, helps you hook ’em better. I like the ones that make a lot of noise, gets their attention, you see.
- Crankbaits: These are the ones that dive down deep when you reel ’em in. They wobble and wiggle and look like a little fish swimmin’ around. Bass like to chase ’em, especially when they’re hangin’ around rocks and weeds. Don’t be scared to fish in shallow water, even just a foot or two deep. Sometimes them big ol’ bass are right there where you least expect ’em. Reel it in slow and steady, just enough to make it work. Maybe one turn of the handle every second or so. That’ll catch ya some bass, I tell ya.
- Spinnerbaits: These got them shiny blades that spin around and flash in the water. Bass can’t resist ’em, especially in cloudy water. They make a lot of vibration, too, which helps the fish find ’em. I like to use a big single hook on my spinnerbaits, helps me hook more fish. You know, them little treble hooks, they can be a pain.
- Swimbaits: These look just like real little fish, swimmin’ through the water. You got your paddle tail swimbaits, they wiggle their tail like a real fish. And then you got your glide baits, they kinda slide through the water real smooth-like. Both of ’em work good in the fall, depends on what the fish are wantin’ that day. You gotta try different things, see what they’re bitin’ on.
- Jigs: Now, jigs are a little different. They’re just a weighted hook with some hair or rubber on ’em. You gotta bounce ’em along the bottom, make ’em look like a crawfish or somethin’. Bass love crawfish, especially in the fall when they’re gettin’ ready for winter. Jigs are good for catchin’ big bass, the kind that put up a real fight. You gotta be patient with jigs, though. Sometimes you gotta work ’em real slow to get a bite.
- Blade Baits: These are thin metal lures that vibrate a lot when you pull ’em through the water. They’re real good for deep water or when the bass are a bit sluggish in the cold. Just a steady retrieve, not too fast, not too slow. Keeps ’em comin’ back for more.
- Single Colorado Blade Baits: Some folks like these, especially when the water is a bit murky. That single blade makes a good thump and flash, gets the bass’s attention even when they can’t see so good. Just cast it out and reel it in, let the blade do the work.
How to Catch Bass in Late Fall
Alright, so you got your lures, now how do you catch them fish? Well, first off, you gotta find ’em. Bass like to hang around cover, you know, like rocks, weeds, and logs. They also like to hang around changes in depth, like drop-offs and points. So you gotta look for them spots.
Once you find a good spot, you gotta try different lures and different retrieves until you figure out what they want. Sometimes they want it fast, sometimes they want it slow. Sometimes they want it on top, sometimes they want it on the bottom. You just gotta keep tryin’ till you find what works.
And don’t be afraid to fish in rough weather. Sometimes them bass get real active when the wind’s blowin’ and the waves are crashin’. Just be careful out there, you don’t wanna fall in the water. And remember, keep your rod low to the water, helps you set the hook.
Now, I ain’t gonna tell ya this is easy. Sometimes them bass are stubborn, and they just won’t bite. But if you stick with it, and you keep tryin’, you’ll catch ’em. Just gotta be patient and persistent, that’s the key. And don’t be afraid to experiment a little. Try different colors, different sizes, different retrieves. The more you try, the more you’ll learn, and the more fish you’ll catch.
So there you have it. That’s my two cents on catchin’ bass in the late fall. Now get out there and go fishin’! And don’t forget your long johns, it gets cold out there on the water!
