Alright, let’s talk about these musky trolling rods, ya know, the kind you use to catch them big ol’ fish. I ain’t no expert, but I’ve seen a thing or two, and I know what works.
First off, you gotta get yourself a rod that’s strong, real strong. These muskies, they ain’t no pansies, they pull hard. You need a rod that can handle it, one that ain’t gonna snap on ya like a twig. I’m talkin’ about a rod that can take a beatin’ and keep on tickin’. Some folks say you need a six to eight-foot rod, somethin’ with a good long butt. Makes sense, I guess. The longer the rod, the more it can bend and the more fish you can reel in without tiring yourself out. And that long butt gives you somethin’ to hold onto when that fish starts fightin’.
Now, don’t go gettin’ all fancy on me with them whippy rods. They look nice and all, but they ain’t gonna do ya no good when you got a monster musky on the line. You need a rod with a backbone, somethin’ that can set that hook deep and keep it there. I heard some fellers sayin’ somethin’ about twenty-pound-plus line, I reckon that’s about right. You don’t want that line breakin’ when you finally got that fish hooked.
- Rod Length: Like I said, six to eight feet is good. Gives ya some leverage.
- Rod Strength: Gotta be strong, real strong. Don’t want it snappin’.
- Rod Butt: Long butt’s good for holdin’ on tight.
And them reels, oh boy, don’t even get me started on them reels. You need a good reel, one that can hold a lot of line, and one that can count how much line you’re lettin’ out. That’s important, ya see, ’cause you gotta know how deep you’re fishin’. Them line counter reels, they’re the ticket. Let you know exactly how much line you got out there. If you fishin’ deep, you let out more line. If you fishin’ shallow, you let out less. It ain’t rocket science, ya know.
I seen some folks usin’ these eight-foot heavy Okuma EVX Musky Trolling rods. Seem to work alright, I guess. But honestly, any good strong rod’ll do ya. It’s more about knowin’ where to fish and how to fish than it is about havin’ the fanciest gear. Though good gear does help you catch fish easier, just my opinion.
Fall’s a good time to go fishin’ for muskies, I hear. Water gets cold, and them fish start gettin’ active. But you gotta have the right stuff, you know? The right rod, the right reel, the right bait. And you gotta have patience, lots of patience. Fishin’ ain’t no sprint, it’s a marathon. You gotta be willin’ to put in the time, sit out there in the cold, and wait for that fish to bite. And sometimes, you might not catch nothin’. That is just the way fishin’ goes. But when you do hook into one of them big muskies, oh boy, it’s worth it. You forget all about all that waiting. Makes all them cold mornings and long days worthwhile.
Some folks, they get all caught up in the gear, you know? They gotta have the latest and greatest, the most expensive stuff. But I’m here to tell ya, it ain’t about that. It’s about knowing what you are doing. It’s about knowin’ how to fish. You could have the fanciest rod and reel in the world, but if you don’t know what you’re doin’, you ain’t gonna catch nothin’. So, get yourself a good strong rod, a good reel, and go out there and fish. And don’t forget to have fun. That’s what it’s all about, ain’t it? Just getting outdoors, enjoying nature, and maybe catchin’ a fish or two.
So there you have it, my two cents on musky trolling rods. Like I said, I ain’t no expert, but I know what works. Get yourself a good strong rod, a good reel, and get out there and fish. And if you don’t catch nothin’, well, at least you had a good day out on the water, right? And if you are serious about improving your gear stash, you can spend some time researching on them online websites, that is what my kids told me to do. There is a lot of information online. Anyways, that is all from me.
