Alright, listen up, y’all. We gonna talk about fishin’ in that there Upper Deschutes River, ya hear? It ain’t nothin’ fancy, just plain fishin’ talk.
What Kinda Fish You Gonna Catch?
Well, they say there’s these big ol’ fish called steelhead. They’re like them rainbow trouts, but they go way out to the ocean and then come back to lay their eggs. Imagine that! Swimmin’ all the way out there and then comin’ back. They say them steelheads can swim way up the Deschutes, all the way from the mouth to some dam they call Pelton, near a lake named Billy Chinook. Don’t ask me who Billy Chinook was, I ain’t got no clue.
Then you got them regular trouts, too. Plenty of ’em, they say. Good eatin’, if you catch ’em right.
Plannin’ Your Fishin’ Trip
Now, if you wanna go fishin’ there, you gotta do some plannin’. Ain’t no use just showin’ up and hopin’ for the best. First thing you gotta do is figure out what’s goin’ on with the river. You know, is the water high, is it low, are the fish bitin’? Them fancy folks, they call it “gettin’ the latest intel.” Sounds like somethin’ out of a spy movie, don’t it? But all it means is findin’ out how the fishin’ is. You can read them fishin’ reports, they got tips and tricks and all that. But talkin’ to the locals, that’s the best way, I tell ya. They know what’s what.
- Spring Fishin’: They say spring is a good time, when everything’s comin’ back to life. Makes sense, I guess. Fish gotta eat, too.
- Summer Fishin’: Summertime’s good too, but it can get hot, so you gotta be prepared for that.
- Fall Fishin’: And then there’s fall, when the leaves change color. Pretty, I hear. And the fish are gettin’ ready for winter, so they’re hungry.
Fishin’ Spots
Now, where to fish? Well, the Deschutes is a long river, so you got plenty of choices. I ain’t gonna tell ya all the secret spots, ’cause then they wouldn’t be secret no more, would they? But I can tell ya this: look for places where the water’s movin’, but not too fast. Fish like that. And look for places where there’s cover, like rocks or logs or bushes. They hide in them places, waitin’ for somethin’ to eat.
What You Need
You ain’t gonna catch no fish without the right gear, that’s for sure. You need a fishin’ pole, of course. And some line. And hooks. And bait. Or maybe them fancy lures, if you’re into that. Them fellas at the fishin’ store, they can help you out. Tell ’em what you’re fishin’ for and they’ll set you up. But don’t let ’em sell you more than you need. They’re always tryin’ to upsell ya, them fellas.
And don’t forget your waders! You don’t wanna get your feet all wet, do ya? Unless it’s a hot day, then maybe it ain’t so bad. And a hat, to keep the sun outta your eyes. And some sunscreen, ’cause that sun can be fierce. And somethin’ to eat and drink, ’cause fishin’ can make you hungry. And a chair, if you wanna sit down. And bug spray, ’cause them skeeters can be nasty.
Be Respectful
Now, this here’s important: you gotta be respectful of the river and the fish and the land. Don’t leave no trash around. And don’t take more fish than you need. And don’t make a bunch of noise and scare everything away. Just be quiet and enjoy the peace and quiet. That’s what fishin’ is all about, ain’t it?
Fishin’ is Fishin’
Look, fishin’ ain’t rocket science. It’s just about gettin’ out there and enjoyin’ nature. If you catch a fish, that’s great. If you don’t, that’s okay too. It’s the gettin’ out there that matters. So go on, get yourself to that Upper Deschutes River and see what you can catch. And don’t forget to tell me all about it when you get back.
One More Thing
Remember to check them fishin’ regulations, ya hear? You don’t want no trouble with the game warden. They got rules about what kind of fish you can keep and how many. And you need a license, too. Don’t go fishin’ without one, or you’ll be in a world of hurt.
Alright, that’s all I got to say. Now go on and get fishin’!
