Alright, let’s talk about this fishin’ thing in Apalachicola. I heard some folks call it a “report,” but I just call it tellin’ it like it is.
So, you wanna know ’bout fishin’ in Apalachicola, huh? Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t always easy. Some days they bitin’ like crazy, other days, nothin’. That’s just how it is. But when they bitin’, oh boy, it’s somethin’ else.
Fishin’ ’round here, it’s got its seasons, ya know. Like in the spring, ’round March to May, that’s when them Spanish and King Mackerel show up. Good eatin’, them fellas. And Cobia too, big ol’ fish, put up a good fight. Flounder too, flat as a pancake, but tasty.
- Speckled Trout: These guys are around pretty much all year. Good fun to catch, and they taste alright too.
- Redfish: Another one you can catch most of the time. They fight hard, these redfish, make ya work for it.
- Sheepshead: Got them funny lookin’ teeth, but they good eatin’. Find ’em near the rocks and bridges.
- Black Drum: Big and black, just like the name says. They can get real big, I tell ya.
Then come summertime, say March to November, there’s all sorts of fish. Spanish mackerel, pompano, tripletail, bluefish, ladyfish and sharks. Sharks ain’t good for eatin’, but some folks like catchin’ ’em. Pompano, now there’s a good fish. Little bit pricey in the store, but if you catch your own, that’s somethin’ special.
Now, ’bout *when* to go fishin’. Some folks say you gotta go early in the mornin’ or late in the evenin’. That’s when the fish are feedin’, they say. Me? I just go when I can. Sometimes I catch somethin’, sometimes I don’t. That’s fishin’ for ya. But folks say the best fishing hours is when the sun comes up or when it goes down, they say fish bites better when the sun is setting or rising. And if ya really want to know, I heard there’s an app can tell ya when fish bites, ain’t that somethin’? I’m too old for that fancy stuff but you young fellas can use it.
And *where* to go fishin’? Well, there’s Apalachicola Bay, that’s a good spot. And the Apalachicola River too. Lots of places to fish around here, you just gotta find ’em. I heard some folks go to Franklin County, they say it’s real pretty there. But I ain’t been there myself.
I ain’t gonna lie, fishin’ ain’t always easy. Sometimes you gotta be patient. Sometimes you gotta try different things. Different bait, different spots, different times of day. But when you finally hook that fish, and you reel it in, and you hold it up in the air, well, there ain’t nothin’ like it. And when you get to cook it up and eat it, oh boy, makes all that waiting worthwhile.
So, if you’re thinkin’ ’bout goin’ fishin’ in Apalachicola, I say go for it. Just remember, it ain’t always easy. But if you stick with it, you might just catch yourself somethin’ good. And if you don’t, well, at least you spent a day out on the water, enjoy the fresh air, can’t complain about that.
And hey, don’t forget to check the fishin’ report before you go. They tell ya what’s bitin’ and where. Not that I always listen to them reports, but they can be helpful sometimes. I just go when I feel like it, fish or no fish, it’s still a good time.
One more thing, be respectful of the water. Don’t leave trash around. Don’t take more fish than you need. We gotta take care of this place, so we can keep fishin’ here for years to come. Keep the river and bay clean so the fish will keep coming back.
Alright, that’s all I got to say ’bout fishin’ in Apalachicola. Now go on out there and catch yourself a big one!
