The best lures for salmon trollin’, now that’s somethin’ ain’t it? Every fella and his dog’s got a different idea, but lemme tell ya, some things just work. You don’t need fancy words or highfalutin gear, just good, solid know-how.
Now, I seen folks pull out all sorts of contraptions, colors flashin’ and spinnin’ like a dancin’ fool. But you gotta think like a fish, not a fella standin’ in a boat. What them salmon want? Somethin’ they recognize, somethin’ looks like food.
- That Gold Star Yamashita plastic squid…well, now, that’s a winner. Folks been usin’ that thing for ages, and for good reason. It just plain works. Don’t matter if you’re after them big Chinook or them frisky Coho, that squid’ll do the trick. They say the #35 Octopus Squid, the one about this big (holds up fingers to show size), that’s the one to use.
Folks say salmon don’t like the bright light, but I ain’t so sure. I seen ’em bite when the sun’s beatin’ down just as good as any other time. Dawn and dusk, sure, they’re good times too, especially when the water’s warm. But don’t you go packin’ up just ’cause the sun’s high. Those fish gotta eat sometime!
Now, when that sun starts shinin’ bright, all that plankton and stuff starts growin’, makes the water murky. Fish can’t see so good then. So, what do you do? You get a lure that stands out, somethin’ they can see even when it’s all cloudy-like. Bright colors, maybe. Somethin’ that flashes and catches their eye.
Think about it…you’re walkin’ through a crowd, everything’s blurry, hard to see faces. But then, someone’s wearin’ a bright red hat…you’re gonna notice that, ain’t ya? Same thing with them salmon. Gotta give ’em somethin’ to see.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s a whole mess of lures out there. Spoons, plugs, all sorts of things. Some days one thing works, other days somethin’ else. That’s fishin’ for ya. But if you’re lookin’ for a place to start, you can’t go wrong with that plastic squid. Been catchin’ salmon for a good long time, that one has.
This here, this ain’t no fancy guide with all the big words. This is just plain talk, from someone who’s seen a thing or two. You want to catch salmon? You gotta get out there, try different things, see what works for you. Don’t be afraid to experiment. That’s half the fun of it, ain’t it?
And remember, it ain’t always about the lure. You gotta be patient, you gotta know where the fish are, and you gotta have a little bit of luck. But havin’ the right lure sure don’t hurt. So, next time you’re headin’ out on the water, remember what I told ya. And good luck!
Now, go on and get yourself one of them Yamashita squids. And maybe a few other things too. You never know what them salmon are gonna be in the mood for. But that squid, that’s a good bet. A real good bet.
