Well, I’ll be darned, let’s talk about fishin’ at that there Brickyard Pond. I ain’t no fancy writer, so don’t expect no big words or nothin’. Just plain talk, like we’re sittin’ on the porch swingin’ our feet.
Now, this here Brickyard Pond, they say it’s an old clay pit, been around for ages. Folks say it’s about eight acres big, which is a good size, I reckon. Plenty of room for fishes to swim around and for us to drop a line.
Fishin’ in the Neighborhoods
I heard tell it’s part of somethin’ called “Fishin’ in the Neighborhoods,” which sounds fancy, but what it means is they stock the pond with fish. Yep, they put ’em in there so folks like you and me can catch ’em. They got them catfish, good eatin’ size, and they put ’em in a few times a year, maybe even four times. Spring and fall, they even throw in some rainbow trout, them pretty lookin’ fish with the pink meat.
And there’s more than just catfish and trout, mind you. They got them largemouth bass, them big ol’ fighters that give you a run for your money. And sunfish too, little fellers, but tasty all the same. They say if the fish ain’t plentiful, they go and put more in, so there’s always somethin’ to catch.

How to Catch ‘Em
Now, catchin’ them fish ain’t always easy. You gotta know what you’re doin’, or at least pretend to. They say you should use a lure that looks like them little baitfish, you know, the ones the big fish like to eat. And don’t just sit in one spot, walk around the pond, try different spots. Sometimes they’re bitin’ close to the bank, sometimes they’re out in the open water.
You gotta cast your line out, then reel it back in, that’s called retrievin’. Do it slow, do it fast, try different things. Sometimes they like it one way, sometimes they like it another. It’s all about figurin’ out what they want.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife and Barbourville City
Folks from the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, they teamed up with the folks from Barbourville City, to make this fishin’ spot real nice for us. They keep it stocked and make sure there’s plenty of fish to catch. And the best part is, you don’t gotta throw back no little ones. All the fish they put in are keepers, big enough to eat.
Them catfish, they stock ’em in March and April, so that’s a good time to go if you like catfish. But honestly, any time’s a good time to go fishin’. It’s peaceful, gettin’ away from the hustle and bustle, just you and the water and the fish. And if you’re lucky, you’ll bring home somethin’ for supper.
Merry Land Brickyard Ponds
Oh yeah, and they also call this place the Merry Land Brickyard Ponds, sounds joyful, don’t it? And it’s true, them ponds are full of fish, alive and well, just waitin’ for you to come and catch ’em.
So, grab your pole, your tackle box, and a hat to keep the sun off your face, and head on down to Brickyard Pond. You might just catch yourself a good time, and maybe even a fish or two.
