Well, let me tell ya, brook trout, they ain’t some kind of fish you just find anywhere, not like them minnows in the creek. No, they like cold waters, real cold, and they been around for ages in places like Eastern Canada, all the way to Hudson Bay and down along the Atlantic. But now, they’re here in Oregon too. Yes, you heard me right, them brook trout found their way over here, and they’ve been makin’ themselves right at home!
Now, I know you might be wonderin’, “What in tarnation is a brook trout?” Well, it ain’t some fancy fish like them rainbow trout you hear about. It’s a small fish, with spots all over it, like a patchwork quilt. It likes to swim in cold streams, especially the ones that got plenty of rocks and deep pools. They hide in the shade under big ol’ boulders or downed logs, places where the sun don’t beat down too hard. You ain’t gonna find ’em in warm, shallow creeks, no sir. They’re picky about where they live, just like a cat with its favorite sunbeam!
Brook trout ain’t native to Oregon, no sir. They were brought here, ’bout the same time folks started settlin’ in these parts. Since then, they’ve been spreadin’ like wildfire. They’ve taken over in a lot of places where the native fish, like rainbow trout and bull trout, used to swim. You know, the native fish ain’t too happy ’bout that, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. Brook trout ain’t just takin’ up space either—they’re doin’ what they do best, they’re fishin’ folks’ dreams up with their fins and scales. You get ’em in the right kind of water, and boy, they can grow big!
If you want to catch one, you’re gonna have to head to them colder spots. Up in the southern Cascades, there’s a few places where you can find ’em, right near the creek inlets and outlets. If the water’s cold enough, you might just get lucky and hook one. Some folks say the best places to fish for brook trout are deep plunge pools, the ones that waterfalls make, or them areas with big ol’ rocks and logs. They like to hide where it’s cool and calm. Don’t expect to catch no big one in the shallow parts though, ’cause them little fellas like to stay near the surface.
But here’s the thing, fishing for these brook trout ain’t no small potatoes. It’s a real sport. They’re quick little critters, and you gotta know where they like to hide. Them big ones, they’re gonna be deeper in the water, usually where there’s plenty of cover. And let me tell ya, it ain’t easy, but it sure is worth it when you get a nice one on the line. Some folks head up to places like the Au Sable River in Michigan or the Rapid River in Maine, where the brook trout love to swim. But right here in Oregon, you can find them too, just gotta know where to look.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ it’s all easy, and it ain’t like fishin’ for those farm-raised trout either. These brook trout, they got their own ways, and they sure can make a meal of your patience. But, oh, the joy when you finally reel one in! And if you’re lucky enough to find a good spot, you might just catch a bunch! Ain’t that a sweet thought? So, if you’re out there in Oregon and you want a challenge, go ahead and try your luck with them brook trout. Just remember, it ain’t gonna be like fishin’ in the ol’ pond by the house. You gotta find the right water, the right spots, and most importantly, the right patience!
So next time you’re wanderin’ the woods and hear a stream babblin’ nearby, think about it. You might just find you a brook trout hangin’ out, waitin’ for you to toss out a line. And who knows, maybe you’ll get a big one! They’re around, you just gotta know where to look.
