Alright, so you wanna learn how to make one of them clam guns, huh? Them things for diggin’ up them razor clams? Well, listen up, ’cause I’m gonna tell ya how. It ain’t rocket science, I tell ya. You don’t need no fancy-schmancy tools or nothin’. Just some stuff you probably got lyin’ around and a few bits and bobs from the hardware store.
First off, you gotta get yourself some pipe. Yeah, pipe. Like, the kind they use for water and stuff. PVC pipe, they call it. Get a piece about, oh, I dunno, three or four feet long. Maybe a little longer if you got long arms. You don’t want to be bendin’ over all day, now do ya? My back would be killin’ me. And get a cap for one end, gotta plug that hole up tight.
Then, you need a handle. Somethin’ to hold onto, see? You can use another piece of pipe, smaller this time, and stick it on the side. Or you can get fancy and buy a proper handle at the hardware store. But why spend the money if you don’t have to? Just make sure it’s strong, ’cause you’ll be pullin’ on it hard, real hard. Drill some holes and screw that handle on there good and tight.
Next up, the important part: the sucker thing. That’s what pulls the clam outta the sand. You can take another piece of pipe that’s slightly smaller than the big one and cut it into a small piece. Then put that piece on the open side of the big pipe, make sure it’s steady. Now you need to make a hole. A small hole, right in the middle of that cap. Big enough to let the air out, but not too big or it won’t suck right. You know, like when you’re sucking up spaghetti, gotta get it just right. Some folks use a drill, some folks use a hammer and nail. I just use whatever’s handy, to be honest with ya.
- Get some PVC pipe, long enough for you to work with.
- Find a cap for the pipe, and another smaller piece for handle and sucker part.
- Make sure the handle is on there tight.
- Drill a small hole in the cap for suction.
Now, how to use it, that’s the trick. You stick that pipe down in the sand, where you think them clams are hidin’. Wiggle it around a bit, get it down deep. Then you cover up that little hole with your finger and pull up. Hard! You gotta pull hard, or it won’t work. And if you do it right, you’ll feel that sucker grab hold of somethin’, and out pops a clam!
It takes a bit of practice, mind you. You won’t get it right the first time, probably. But keep at it, and you’ll be pullin’ up clams like a pro in no time. And let me tell ya, there ain’t nothin’ better than fresh clams, fried up with a bit of butter and garlic. My mouth is waterin’ just thinkin’ about it.
Anyways, that’s pretty much all there is to it. DIY clam gun, simple as that. Don’t go spendin’ your hard-earned money on some fancy store-bought one when you can make your own for a few bucks. Now get out there and get yourself some clams!
Remember, safety first. Don’t go diggin’ in places you ain’t supposed to, and always be mindful of the tides. And if you see me out there on the beach, don’t come bother me unless you’re bringin’ some of them fried clams you cooked up with that gun I showed you how to make! Just kidding… mostly.
And if that sucker thing isn’t working too well, just keep trying. Sometimes you gotta play around with the hole size, or the handle grip. It ain’t always perfect, but that’s half the fun of it. Building it yourself is always the best, gives it that personal touch.
Now I’m done talking. Time to go get my own clam gun and get myself some fresh dinner.
