Alright, let’s talk about fishin’ at that St. Augustine pier, ya know, the one they always talkin’ ’bout. I ain’t no fancy fisherman, but I’ve been throwin’ lines in the water long enough to know a thing or two.
The Pier Situation
Now, last I heard, they got some troubles with that pier. Seems like some of them wood posts underneath need fixin’. They say it’s closed for fishin’ on the end part, somethin’ ’bout the last 100 feet or so. Don’t know why they can’t just get it done quick, but that’s how them city folks do things, I guess. You can still go on the pier, though, just not all the way out.
What You Can Catch
Even with that part closed, there’s still fish to be caught. I’ve heard tell of folks catchin’ redfish, them drum fish, and even snook, right in the inshore waters. That means you don’t gotta go way out. And if you like freshwater, they say the bass are jumpin’ in the lakes and rivers around here. Out in the ocean, there’s bigger stuff like amberjack, dolphin fish – no, not Flipper, the other kind – and them big tarpon. But you need a boat for that, most likely.
Fishin’ Spots and Costs
St. Johns County Ocean Pier, that’s the one on St. Augustine Beach, they say it’s a good spot. You don’t need no boat, just a rod and some bait. Costs a few dollars to get on, though, three bucks I think, if you ain’t from around here. If you are, maybe it’s cheaper, I dunno. Never bothered askin’ too many questions.
- Inshore: Redfish, drum, snook – good for folks who like to stay close to shore.
- Lakes and Rivers: Bass – fun to catch and good eatin’.
- Offshore: Amberjack, dolphin, tarpon – need a boat, and probably more muscle to reel ‘em in.
Other Fishin’ Options
Now, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ fancier, they got these boat trips, charters they call ’em. You can go out with a captain and he’ll take you to where the fish are. Down in them Keys, Islamorada they call it, they got lots of them fancy fishin’ trips. But that’s a ways to go, and it costs a pretty penny. I stick to the pier mostly.
Finding Out What’s Biting
There’s ways to find out what kinda fish are bitin’. Some fellas, Captain Troy somethin’-or-other, he puts out these fishin’ reports. Tells you what’s been caught and where. You can probably find it online, if you know how to use them computer things. Me, I just go and see what happens. Sometimes you catch somethin’, sometimes you don’t. That’s fishin’ for ya.
Don’t Forget Your Gear
Now, you ain’t gonna catch nothin’ without the right gear. You need a good rod and reel, some line that’s strong enough, hooks, and bait. Shrimp works good, so do them little fish they call minnows. You can buy all that stuff at the bait shops around here. And don’t forget a hat and some sunscreen, that sun can be fierce out there.
Tickets and Tours
Heard tell of folks gettin’ tickets online, skip-the-line they call it. Sounds fancy, but I ain’t never done it. Guess it’s for them tourists. They got tours too, where someone takes you around and shows you stuff. If you’re into that kinda thing, you can find it on them travel websites, like that TripAdvisor one. But I just like to fish.
So, Go Fishin’!
So, that’s the lowdown on fishin’ at the St. Augustine pier, as best as I can tell ya. Don’t expect no fancy fishin’ tales from me, just plain talk. Go on down there, throw a line in the water, and see what happens. Maybe you’ll catch somethin’ good. And even if you don’t, it’s still a nice way to spend a day.
