Well, I’ll tell ya, fishing in Coos Bay, Oregon, it’s somethin’ else. Folks always askin’, “When’s the best time to go fishin’?” I say, it depends. You gotta know what you’re lookin’ for.
Now, some folks like fishin’ in the bay itself. Coos Bay, that’s a big ol’ bay, lots of places for fish to hide. You got yer salmon, yer steelhead, even some trout in there, I hear. Then there’s them crabs, big ol’ Dungeness crabs, tasty fellas they are. But hold yer horses, right now, from Cape Blanco down to the California line, they closed the bay crabbing. No Dungeness, no red rock, nothin’. Winter time, they say. Gotta wait for ’em to grow big and fat again, I reckon.
If you’re after salmon, well, you gotta know when they’re runnin’. Them Chinook, they start comin’ around July or August, and they hang around ’til October. Coho, too. They like that cool water, ya know? Not too cold, not too warm. Just right. The Coos River, that’s a good spot for salmon. Folks say it’s one of the best places in Oregon. You can catch ’em from the bank, or you can get yourself a boat. Lots of folks fishin’ from boats out there.
- July and August are good months for fishing. The water is warm, and the fish are bitin’.
- But you can still catch fish in September and October.
- The Coos River is a good spot to fish for Chinook and Coho salmon, steelhead, cutthroat trout, and shad.
- If you want to fish in the ocean, some folks say Depoe Bay, Newport, and Coos Bay are good spots.
Now, if you’re thinkin’ ’bout fishin’ in the ocean, that’s a whole different story. You gotta have a good boat, and you gotta know what you’re doin’. The ocean, she’s a mighty beast. Can get rough out there, real quick. But there’s fish out there, too. Lingcod, halibut, tuna sometimes. Big fish, I tell ya. You gotta go out a ways, though. Miles and miles sometimes.
People always talkin’ about the weather. Says it matters to the fish. I don’t know about all that. Fish gotta eat, right? Rain or shine, they gotta eat. But I guess it does make it easier on us if the weather’s nice. Nothin’ worse than sittin’ in the rain, waitin’ for a bite.
Some folks use them fancy apps and gadgets to find the fish. I ain’t got no use for that stuff. I just go where the fish are. You gotta look for the signs, ya know? Birds divin’, fish jumpin’, that kinda thing. And you gotta be patient. Fishin’ ain’t no race. It’s about relaxin’ and enjoyin’ the outdoors. And maybe catchin’ a fish or two while you’re at it. So if you wanna know when to go fishin’ in Coos Bay, I say, go when you can. Anytime’s a good time to go fishin’, long as you got a pole and some bait. And maybe a warm jacket, ’cause it can get chilly out there, even in the summer. And don’t forget your license! Gotta have a license, or the game warden will get ya. And nobody wants that.
Anyways, that’s what I know about fishin’ in Coos Bay. It ain’t much, but it’s honest. Now go on out there and catch yourself a fish!
