Alright, let’s talk about fishin’ at that Sam Rayburn place. You know, the big ol’ lake out in East Texas.
Bass Fishin’
Now, them bass, they’re the big shots ’round here. Folks say you can catch ’em all year long, which is mighty fine. If you wanna get them shallow bass, the ones chasin’ them little shad fish, you gotta use somethin’ that spins or them frog lookin’ things that float on top. You know, spinnerbaits and topwater frogs, they call ’em. I just call ’em the shiny things and the froggy things.
But if the bass ain’t bitin’ up top, you gotta go down deep. Them plastic worms, the chartreuse ones, they seem to work alright. And them crankbaits, the ones that don’t go too deep, those can get ’em too. Just gotta keep tryin’ different things, ya know? Fishin’ ain’t always easy.
Crappie Fishin’
Crappie, now them’s good eatin’ fish. They kinda move around a bit, dependin’ on the time of year. After they’re done layin’ their eggs, they go off to deeper water. They like them brush piles, you know, the ones that sunk down in the water. It’s like a hidey-hole for ’em.
- You can catch ’em with jigs, them little colorful things with hooks on ’em. But them crappie, they’ve seen a lot of jigs, so sometimes you gotta be sneaky. Some folks use a little float, some don’t. Just depends on how you like to do it.
- Lately, they say the crappie are movin’ from them brush piles in the main lake to the creek channels. That means they’re headin’ to shallower water to lay their eggs, I reckon. So, you gotta follow ’em.
- And if you’re usin’ minnows, well, that’s always a good bet for crappie. They just love them little minnows.
Other Fish
Now, Sam Rayburn ain’t just about bass and crappie. There’s catfish too. Big ol’ catfish. Them fellas like to hang out in the creeks, eatin’ cut bait off the bottom. You just throw your line out there, weight it down, and wait. Sometimes you gotta wait a while, but it’s worth it when you pull up a big ol’ catfish.
There’s also some white bass, but not too many of ’em. You can catch ’em in the spring, up the river. And then there’s them bluegill and sunfish. Lots of them little fellas. Good for the kids to catch, ya know? Keeps ’em busy.
Water and Stuff
The water in that lake, it ain’t always clear. Sometimes it’s kinda stained, like tea or coffee. And the water level, well, it goes up and down. Lately, they say it’s been kinda low. That can make the fishin’ a little tricky, but the fish are still in there, you just gotta find ’em.
Sam Rayburn – A Good Fishin’ Place
Folks say Sam Rayburn is one of the best fishin’ spots in the whole country. I don’t know about all that, but it’s a pretty good lake. Big too, covers a lot of ground. You can fish for bass, crappie, catfish, and all sorts of other things. It’s a good place to spend a day, or even a week, if you like fishin’. Just remember to bring your patience, ’cause fishin’ ain’t always easy. And don’t forget your pole!
Some Tips
If you ain’t never fished there before, maybe you should get yourself a guide. Someone who knows the lake, knows where the fish are bitin’. There’s this fella, Mike Knight, they say he’s been fishin’ and huntin’ ’round here for 60 years. He probably knows a thing or two. And remember to bring plenty of bait and tackle, ’cause you never know what you’re gonna need.
So, that’s about all I know about fishin’ at Sam Rayburn. It ain’t rocket science, just gotta get out there and try it. Good luck, and tight lines!
