Ya know, fishin’ in the Deschutes River, it’s somethin’ else. Water’s good, mostly. They say up near the top and in the Little Deschutes, it’s real nice. Down by the Lower part, ain’t as good, but still alright. Crooked Subbasins, now, that’s a mess. Water’s too hot in lots of places, fish don’t like that much.
That river, the Lower Deschutes, it goes south to north, from that Pelton Dam near Madras all the way up to the Columbia. Pretty as a picture, they say. Folks come from all over just to see it. And the fish? Rainbow trout, they’re somethin’ special. Pure as the driven snow, they say.
Want to know how the river’s flowin’? Gotta look at the Madras gauge, that’s what they say. Shows ya right then and there what’s happenin’. Tells ya about the fly fishin’ too. Folks are always talkin’ ’bout fly fishin’ on the Lower Deschutes.
Rainbow trout and Steelhead, that’s what folks go after. Wanna know what flies to use? Gotta find the report, tells ya what’s workin’. They got tags and stuff, Deschutes Fly Fishin’ Report, Lower Deschutes, all sorts of things.
- River’s got three parts, they say. Each one’s different.
- Trout and Steelhead, they got their times. Gotta know when to go.
- Bugs hatchin’, that’s important too. Fish like to eat bugs.
- Gotta know how to get to the river, ain’t no good if ya can’t get there.
They call it Oregon’s crown jewel, that river. Means it’s somethin’ special, I reckon.
Salmon flies, they’re a big deal. Gotta use them chubby Chernobyls and dry dropper rigs, whatever those are. Folks catch a lot of fish with ’em.
Winter fishin’ ain’t bad neither. Gotta do it right though. Use the right stuff, go to the right spots. Man named Ben, he knows a thing or two about it.
Trips fill up fast, they say. Gotta call quick if ya wanna go. Dry fly fishin’, that’s what they’re talkin’ about. Seems folks like that a lot.
Fishin’ report, that’s what ya need. Tells ya what’s goin’ on. Water flow, bugs, what kinda fish are bitin’, all of it. Helps ya catch more fish, I reckon.
