Well, howdy there! You wanna know about fishin’ in them Detroit Lakes, huh? Alright, I’ll tell ya what I know. I ain’t no fancy fishin’ expert or nothin’, just an old gal who’s spent a fair bit of time by the water.
So, first things first, they got all kinds of fish in them lakes. Pike, that’s a good one. Big ol’ fish, them pikes. They say you can catch ’em with big minnows and big plastic thingamajigs. I ain’t never used them fancy plastics myself, always stuck to good ol’ worms and minnows, but folks say they work. Then there’s them bass, largemouth and smallmouth. Same deal, they like them big baits too, seems like.
Now, when’s the best time to go fishin’? Well, that’s the million-dollar question, ain’t it? I reckon any time’s a good time to be by the water, but if you wanna catch somethin’, you gotta be smart about it. Folks say early mornin’ and dusk is the best. Makes sense, I guess. Fish gotta eat too, and they probably like it when it ain’t too hot out. Just like the rest of us.
Them Detroit Lakes, they’re somethin’ special, I tell ya. Folks come from all over to fish here. They even stock the lakes with fish, I heard. Rainbow trout, they call ’em. Pretty fish, them rainbows. And Kokanee and Chinook salmon too. I ain’t never caught one of them fancy salmon myself, but I seen pictures. They look mighty tasty.
- Baits and Lures: Like I said, worms and minnows are always a good bet. But folks use all kinds of things. Shiny spinners, they call ’em Wedding Rings or Rooster Tails. Nightcrawlers too, them big fat worms. And if you’re fishin’ deep, they say you gotta use them flashers, like Ford Fenders. I ain’t sure what that means, but it sounds important.
- Best Times: Early mornin’, dusk, that’s what they say. But don’t let that stop ya if you wanna go fishin’ in the middle of the day. You might get lucky.
- Types of Fish: Pike, bass, trout, salmon… All kinds of fish in them lakes. You never know what you’re gonna pull up. That’s part of the fun, I reckon.
Now, some folks like to go to Lake Winnie. They say it’s a good place to catch walleye, especially early in the season. I ain’t fished there much myself, but I heard it ain’t too hard to fish, even though it’s a big lake. That’s good news for us folks who ain’t got fancy boats and all that gear.
The state, they put out these fishin’ reports, you know. Tell ya what’s bitin’ and where. I reckon that’s helpful, if you know how to read ’em. They got folks called creel clerks and DNR staff, whatever that means, who go around and check on the fishin’. Then they write it all down and tell everyone else. Seems like a lot of work, if you ask me. I’d rather just go fishin’.
You gotta have a license to fish, too. Don’t forget that! They’ll fine ya good if you don’t have a license. And you gotta know the rules, when you can fish and what kind of fish you can keep. They change the rules sometimes, so you gotta pay attention. It’s a whole lot of rigmarole, but I guess it’s important to keep the fishin’ good for everyone.
So, there ya have it. That’s all I know about fishin’ in Detroit Lakes. It ain’t much, but it’s honest. Just remember to be patient, keep your line in the water, and enjoy the peace and quiet. And maybe you’ll catch somethin’ good. Good luck to ya!
