Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this mackinaw fish, or whatever fancy folks call it. Some say lake trout, some say mackinaw, I just call it a fish, ya know?
Where they at? These fish, they like it cold, real cold. Like them deep, dark lakes up north. Heard tell they got ‘em in Canada and them Great Lakes. Also, some folks say they swimmin’ around in Lake Tahoe and them Ruby Mountains. Cold water’s where they like to be, just like my old cellar in the wintertime.
Now, these mackinaw fish, they ain’t no small fry. Them fellas can get big, real big. I heard tell of one caught way back when, weighed a whoppin’ 72 pounds! Can you imagine that? That’s bigger than my prize-winning pumpkin, and that was somethin’ else! But mostly, folks catch ‘em smaller, you know, maybe three to ten pounds. Still a good eatin’ size, I reckon.
What do they look like? Well, they’re kinda green, kinda gray, with spots. White spots, yellow spots, all over. And their belly? White as snow, like a fresh sheet on the clothesline. They say they’re part of the salmon family, but they don’t look like no salmon I ever seen. But then again, I ain’t seen all that many salmon in my day.
- Big fish: Can get real big, world record was 72 pounds!
- Cold water lovers: Like it deep and cold, up north mostly.
- Spotty fellas: Greenish, grayish, with white and yellow spots.
- Good eatin’: Folks say they taste mighty fine.
Now, why folks fish for ‘em? Well, mostly ‘cause they taste good, I hear. I ain’t never tasted one myself, being a land-lovin’ woman, but I heard they’re mighty delicious. Folks go out on them boats, with their fancy poles and lines, just to catch these fish. Must be somethin’ special, all that fuss.
In Lake Tahoe, they say these fish can get up to 40 or 50 pounds, maybe even more. That’s a lot of fish, let me tell ya. Enough to feed a whole family, and then some. I reckon if I was younger, and didn’t have this bad hip, I might even try to catch one myself. But then again, I always preferred a good ol’ chicken dinner.
So, there you have it. A little somethin’ about them mackinaw fish. They’re big, they’re spotty, they like it cold, and folks say they taste mighty fine. If you ever get a chance to see one, or even eat one, well, you go right ahead. Just don’t forget to tell me all about it, ya hear?
And one more thing, they got all sorts of names. Lake trout, mackinaw, namaycush, lake char, touladi, togue, grey trout, even siscowet in some parts. Too many names for one fish, if you ask me. Just call it a fish, and be done with it.
Remember, when you’re out there fishin’, be respectful. Don’t take more than you need, and keep them waters clean. That’s how we were raised, and that’s how it should be. Them fish, they gotta live too, you know.
