Well, howdy there! Let’s gab a bit about fishin’, ya hear? Specifically, ’bout that there Lower Deschutes River. I ain’t no fancy writer, so don’t expect no big words or nothin’. Just gonna tell it like it is, the way I see it.
Now, this here Lower Deschutes fishing report, it’s somethin’ else. Folks been catchin’ some mighty big fish, I tell ya! I heard tell of a fella catchin’ a whitefish, big as a doggone baby! Said it was near 24 inches long and weighed more’n five pounds! Can you believe that? A 14-inch girth, too! That’s a fat fish, ain’t it?
Seems like the fishin’ is just plain exceptionally well right now. That’s what them fancy folks say, “exceptionally well.” I just say it’s darn good fishin’! They’re bitin’ like crazy, and that’s all that matters to me.
- They got all sorts of fish in that river, you know. Trout, them kokanee salmon, even some bass and catfish. I ain’t picky, I’ll catch whatever’s bitin’.
- But you gotta watch out, ’cause there’s rules. Can’t just go catchin’ whatever you want, whenever you want. They got seasons and limits and all that jazz.
- Down below the dam, the season starts ’round April 22nd. Up higher, you can fish year-round, but you gotta let them steelhead go. They’re wild, ya see, gotta keep ’em around for the young’uns.
Now, they say you can catch five of them kokanee a day, on top of your trout. And them bass and brown trout? Catch all you want, they ain’t got no limits on ’em. Ain’t that somethin’? But remember, always check them fishin’ rules, ’cause they can change, and you don’t wanna get in trouble with the game warden. Them fellas don’t mess around, I tell ya.
If you’re lookin’ for a place to wet your line, that Haystack Reservoir ain’t too shabby neither. It’s got all sorts of fish too – rainbow trout, kokanee, crappie, bass, and even them bullhead catfish. Ugly as sin, but they taste alright fried up with some cornmeal.
They say that reservoir is open all year long, so you can go fishin’ whenever the mood strikes ya. But me, I like fishin’ in the river best. Somethin’ ’bout that movin’ water, you know? It’s peaceful, ‘cept when you hook a big one, then it’s a whole lotta excitement!
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I’ve been fishin’ these parts for a long time. And let me tell ya, the Lower Deschutes River is a special place. It’s beautiful, the fishin’ is good, and the people are friendly, mostly. You get the occasional city slicker who don’t know a trout from a tadpole, but that’s alright. We all gotta learn somehow.
If you’re plannin’ on comin’ out here to fish, make sure you got the right gear. A good rod and reel, some bait or lures, and a license, of course. And don’t forget your patience, ’cause fishin’ ain’t always easy. Sometimes you gotta sit there for hours before you get a bite. But that’s part of the fun, ain’t it? Just sittin’ there, enjoyin’ the sunshine and the fresh air, waitin’ for that big one to come along.
And if you do catch a big one, don’t forget to take a picture! And maybe even let it go, so it can grow even bigger and give someone else the same thrill. That’s what I do, most of the time anyway. Unless it’s a real whopper, then I might just have to keep it for supper.
So, there you have it. My own little fishing report for the Lower Deschutes. It ain’t fancy, but it’s honest. And if you’re lookin’ for a good place to fish, you can’t go wrong with the Deschutes. Just remember to be respectful of the river and the fish, and you’ll have a grand old time. Now get out there and wet a line!
One more thing, if you want to keep up with the fishin’ reports, they got them updates you can sign up for. Every week they tell you where the fish are bitin’ and what they’re bitin’ on. Handy information, if you ask me. They send them out for Bend, OR and the surrounding areas. Just look up “Weekly Lower Deschutes fishing report” and you should find it. It helps folks figure out what’s going on before they head out.
And don’t be shy to talk to the locals. They’ll tell you where the good spots are. Just be polite and offer them a cup of coffee or somethin’. Us country folk are friendly, long as you’re friendly back.
