Well, if you’re headin’ over to Avalon, New Jersey, to do some fishin’, you gotta know when the fish are gonna be bitin’! Now, I ain’t no expert, but I can tell ya that there’s a few things to keep in mind when you’re out there. First off, if you’re fishin’ at that 8th street jetty, make sure you pay attention to the right hours. Fish don’t bite all day, y’know! They got their times. They say there’s an app for it now that can help you out, called BiteTime™. I reckon if I had one of them gadgets, I’d be all over it, but ain’t no shame in just goin’ when you feel it’s right. Ain’t that the way folks do it around here?
Now, if you’re wonderin’ what kind of fish are swimmin’ ’round these parts, I’ll tell ya what I know. In September, you could catch a few stripers, bluefish, maybe even some weakfish and fluke if you’re lucky. And if you like a good ol’ battle with a big fish, well, that’s the time to go. You gotta find the right spots though. Some folks swear by the Inlet, but you gotta watch out, it can be rough out there! Even in a small boat, the ocean can be mighty fierce at times.
And don’t forget your bait! That’s a big one. I been down to Avalon Hodge Podge myself, and let me tell you, they got everything you need. Over 6,000 items, they say! From bait to tackle to just about anything a fisherman might need. It’s a little gem of a store, and folks there sure know their stuff. They’ll set you up right if you don’t know what to get.
If you’re the type that likes to go on the bigger boats, there’s always Miss Avalon Fishing. That boat’s a popular one around here. Good for families too, ’cause you can all head out together. Some days it’s calm, others it’s a little rough, but that’s part of the fun, ain’t it?
There’s even talk ’bout the fishin’ reports from the NOAA folks. They keep track of fish conservation stuff, and I reckon that’ll help folks know when to fish and what to expect. The weather can be tricky, though. I heard some folks had trouble gettin’ out because the inlet was too rough, but I bet there’s always a good spot to find some fish if you ask around.
As for the rest of the year, stripers keep comin’ in strong, especially ‘round November. They love them bunker and sand eels, so if you got a line out there, be ready. Bluefin tuna can be caught too, but ya gotta go a little further out, between four and ten miles. And if you’re in the mood for some blackfish, they’re bitting good as we get close to the 5-fish season. Fishin’ really picks up when the seasons change, ya know?
For folks who like a quieter time, Island Beach State Park has plenty to offer, too. Stripers, bluefish, fluke, and weakfish are common there, though it’s mostly in the summer months. It’s a good place to relax and get some fishin’ done if you don’t mind the company of wildlife and a lot of plants. A perfect spot if you’re not in a hurry!
So, when you’re out there in Avalon, make sure you pack right, plan your time, and know where the fish are bitin’. Fishin’ ain’t always easy, but if you stick with it, you’ll have a good time, and maybe even come home with a nice catch.
