Alright, so you wanna know about fishin’ in that Nehalem Bay, huh? Well, let me tell ya, it ain’t nothin’ fancy, but it can be good if you know a little somethin’ about it. I heard some folks call it “Nehalem Bay Fishing”, sounds all high and mighty, but it’s just fishin’, plain and simple.
First off, that bay, it’s up there in Oregon, on the coast. Pretty place, lots of trees and water. They got them parks and stuff, places to camp. You can even ride your bike and look at the water, see some birds and maybe a deer or elk if you’re lucky. But we ain’t here for the scenery, are we? We’re here for the fishin’!
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I know people catch salmon in that bay. Big ones, too, they say. They come in durin’ July, swimmin’ in from the ocean. Good eatin’, those salmon. And steelhead, too. Them’s some kinda trout, fight real hard when you hook ‘em. They say the river and the ocean meet up there, makes it good for fishin’.
- Salmon fishin’ is real popular.
- Steelhead fishin’ is good too.
- You might see some other critters while you’re out there.
Folks talk about fishin’ reports, tellin’ you where the fish are bitin’ and what they’re bitin’ on. I never paid much mind to them reports, just went fishin’ when I felt like it. But some folks swear by ‘em. They got websites and stuff now, all fancy. They tell you about the water and how many fish they caught. I heard someone say somethin’ about a “fish counter” last Friday they caught 13, must be one of them new fangled report things.
They say you can fish from the shore, or you can take a boat out. Boats are nice, get you out to where the fish are, but you gotta have a boat, and gas ain’t cheap these days. Fishin’ from the shore is just fine for me. Find a good spot, cast your line, and wait. That’s all there is to it.
What kinda gear you need? Well, a fishin’ rod, of course. And some line. And hooks. And bait. Worms work good, so do those little shiny things, spinners they call ‘em. Different fish like different things, so you gotta try different stuff. And don’t forget a bucket to put your fish in. And a knife to clean ‘em with. And a license, gotta have a license, or the game warden will get ya.
Weather matters too. Rainy days can be good for fishin’, but they ain’t much fun for sittin’ around. Sunny days are nice, but the fish might not bite as good. You just gotta take what you get and make the best of it. I heard someone talkin’ about some analytics on time and weather, but that’s just too much for this old woman.
Now, I heard tell there’s crabbin’ in that bay too. And kayakin’. People like to paddle around in them little boats. But I ain’t never tried that. I stick to fishin’. It’s what I know.
So, if you’re gonna go fishin’ in Nehalem Bay, just remember a few things. Be patient. Be quiet. And don’t expect to catch a fish every time you cast your line. Sometimes you catch somethin’, sometimes you don’t. That’s just fishin’. But it’s a good way to spend a day, out in the fresh air, away from all the hustle and bustle. And if you’re lucky, you might even bring home somethin’ for supper. Just remember to follow the rules and keep the place clean. We don’t want them city folks comin’ out here and closin’ down our fishin’ spots.
And one last thing, if you see an old lady sitting on the shore with a fishin’ pole, don’t bother her too much. She’s probably just tryin’ to catch some dinner.
