Alright, let’s talk about this… uh… fenwick fly fishing, whatever that means. My grandson, he’s always yappin’ about it. Says it’s some fancy way to catch them fishies. Now, I’ve caught my share of fish, and I ain’t never needed no fancy stuff.
First off, you gotta get yourself a stick, a long one, they call it a “rod.” And a… a… “reel,” that’s what he calls it, looks like a fancy spool to me. You wind the “line” on it, that’s the string, you know? And then there’s this “leader” thing, I guess it helps ya not scare the fish, whatever. But you definitely need them fake flies, they look like bugs and such, the fishies think it’s food, you see?
- Rod – long stick
- Reel – fancy spool
- Line – the string
- Leader – the invisible part, I guess
- Flies – fake bugs
- Something to cut the line – don’t use your teeth, my grandson yelled at me for that!
Now, my grandson, he talks about them fancy lines, “gold” this and “grand” that. Sounds like somethin’ you’d wear to a weddin’, not fishin’. But he says the “gold” one is good for beginners, so I guess if you’re just startin’ out, go with that. He also said you need to trim the fishing line, so get some scissors or somethin’ sharp. Don’t be like me and try bitin’ it, almost broke my old teeth!
When to go fishin’? Well, early in the mornin’, when the sun’s just peekin’ over the trees, that’s a good time. Or later in the afternoon, when it’s coolin’ down. Them fishies, they don’t like the hot sun, just like me. If you’re lucky enough to find a little stream where nobody’s been fishin’, well, you can catch somethin’ pretty much any time of day.
Where to throw that fly? That’s the tricky part, ain’t it? It ain’t just chuckin’ it in the water and hopin’ for the best. You gotta think like a fish. Where would you be hidin’? Where would the tasty bugs be? My grandson, he talks about “presentin’ the fly” and all that fancy talk. Just try to make it look natural, like a real bug fallin’ in the water. Don’t go splashin’ around like a crazy goose, you’ll scare ‘em all away.
This whole fly fishin’ thing, it seems awful complicated to me. But my grandson, he says it’s excitin’, makes you feel alive. I guess it is kinda fun watchin’ that little fly float on the water, waitin’ for a bite. And when you do hook a fish, well, that’s always a good feelin’. It’s a bit hard at first though, even my grandson struggled when he started.
So, if you’re lookin’ to try this fenwick fly fishin’, don’t get yourself all worked up about it. Start with the basics, that stick, the spool, the string, and some fake bugs. Go fishin’ when it’s cool, and try to think like a fish. And if you don’t catch nothin’, well, at least you got some fresh air and sunshine. That’s good for the soul, you know?
If you’re lookin’ to learn more, there’s places you can go, websites and such. My grandson, he’s always readin’ them “how-to” articles. He says they got all sorts of tips and tricks for beginners. But honestly, the best way to learn is just to get out there and do it. You’ll make mistakes, sure, but that’s how you learn. And who knows, maybe you’ll even catch yourself a big ol’ fish.
This fly fishing thing is a whole different ball game from dunkin’ worms, I’ll tell you that. But there’s something peaceful about it, even if I don’t always understand what my grandson’s jabberin’ about. Just remember, keep it simple, be patient, and enjoy the time outdoors.
