Alright, let’s talk about fishin’ at that Fern Ridge place, ya know, the reservoir. I ain’t no fancy fishin’ expert or nothin’, but I’ve been around enough to know a thing or two ’bout catchin’ fish. This ain’t gonna be no fancy talk, just plain and simple, like how it is.
First off, what kinda fish you wanna catch? They got all sorts in that there water. I heard tell of crappie, those are pretty good eatin’. And catfish, oh my, those are fun to pull in, big and strong they are. Then there’s bass, largemouth bass they call ’em. Folks say they put up a good fight. And bluegill too, little fellas but tasty. And don’t forget them trout, cutthroat trout, they’re somethin’ special, they say.
Now, when’s the best time to go fishin’? Well, that depends. In the spring, when the water starts warmin’ up, that’s when the fish get hungry. February or so, the water starts comin’ up, that’s a good sign. Summer’s good too, especially if you wanna go swimmin’ or picnickin’ too. They got places for that, you know, parks and stuff, right on the water. You can even do that sailin’ thing or ski on the water, if you’re into that fancy stuff.
Where to go fishin’ at Fern Ridge? Well, that’s the big question, ain’t it? Some folks say the north side of the lake is the best. More fish over there, they claim. But I say, you gotta just go out there and find ’em yourself. Cruise around in your boat, if you got one. If you’re lookin’ for bass, just keep your eyes peeled. You’ll see where they like to hang out, the spots with the weeds and such. One fella told me the southwest corner, where that Long Tom river comes in, that’s a good spot for bass. But heck, anywhere along the shore could be good, depends on the day I reckon.
And how do you catch ’em? Well, that depends on the fish, don’t it? For crappie, you might use some little jigs or minnows. Catfish, they like stink bait, the smellier the better. Bass, they go for them fancy lures, the ones that wiggle and wobble. Bluegill, worms and crickets work just fine. And trout, well, they’re a bit pickier, you might need some special flies or somethin’. But don’t get too hung up on all that fancy stuff. Sometimes, just a plain old worm on a hook is all you need.
- Important stuff to remember:
- Got to have a fishin’ license, don’t wanna get in trouble with the law.
- Bring plenty of bait, you don’t wanna run out when the fish are bitin’.
- Wear a hat and sunscreen, the sun can be brutal out there.
- Bring some snacks and drinks, fishin’ can make you hungry and thirsty.
- And most important, be patient. Fishin’ ain’t always easy, sometimes you gotta wait a while for them to bite.
They also let the water down in the winter, leaves a lot of mud, not so good for fishin’ then. They do it for the floods or somethin’. So stick to the warmer months, that’s my advice.
Now, I ain’t gonna lie, some days you catch a bunch, some days you don’t catch nothin’. That’s just fishin’. But even if you don’t catch anythin’, it’s still a good day to be out on the water, enjoyin’ the fresh air and the sunshine. And hey, if you do catch some fish, that’s just a bonus, ain’t it? Perfect day, like they say. You can even get an app on your phone that tells you when the fish are gonna bite. They call it “BiteTime”. Fancy, huh? But me, I just go when I feel like it.
So, there you have it, my two cents on fishin’ at Fern Ridge. Go out there and give it a try. You might just catch yourself a big one. And if you do, well, send me an invite for a fish fry!
