Well, howdy there! Let me tell ya ’bout fishin’ ’round Coos Bay, Oregon. Folks say it’s a good spot, and I reckon they ain’t lyin’. I ain’t no fancy fisherman, mind you, just an old gal who likes to wet a line now and then. But I’ve seen a thing or two, and I can tell ya what I know.
Fishin’ Holes and Such
Now, they got all sorts of places to fish around here. Lakes, rivers, reservoirs, you name it. I heard tell of some fellers catchin’ bass, big ol’ largemouth bass, in them lakes. And rainbow trout too. Pretty fish, them rainbows, all shimmery and such. Folks use somethin’ called Fishbrain to keep track of what they catch, more’n six hundred bass and two hundred and some trout, they say. That’s a whole lotta fish, I tell ya!
And the Coos River, that’s a big one. They got salmon in there, Chinook and Coho they call ’em. Big fellers, them salmon, put up a good fight. And steelhead too, and some kinda trout called cutthroat. Don’t know why they call it that, sounds kinda mean if ya ask me. And shad, whatever them are. They say it’s one of the best places in Oregon to catch them salmon and steelhead. Starts in the summer, goes on till fall, that’s what I heard.
- Bass: Big ones, in the lakes.
- Trout: Rainbow ones, pretty and shimmery.
- Salmon: Chinook and Coho, big fighters. They run in the fall mostly.
- Steelhead: Another big fighter, good eatin’.
- Cutthroat trout: Don’t know much about these, but they’re in the river.
- Shad: Heard of ’em, never caught one myself.
Best Time to Go Fishin’
Now, when to go fishin’? That’s the million-dollar question, ain’t it? Some folks say early mornin’, some say late evenin’. Me, I like to go whenever the fish are bitin’. There’s this thing called BiteTime™, they say it helps you know when to go. I ain’t used it myself, but folks seem to like it. For them salmon, they say fall is the time to be here, July or August all the way through October. That’s what I hear tell, anyway.
Other Stuff to Know
They got maps and reports and all kinds of stuff to help ya find the fishin’ spots. More than sixteen hundred spots, they say! That’s a lot of fishin’, more’n I could ever do in a lifetime. They talk about the weather and the best spots for different kinds of fish. And they got guides too, if you’re the kind that likes that sort of thing. They tell you what’s bitin’ and where. You can find information all over the place ’bout Coos Bay fishing. Just gotta look around a bit.
And don’t forget the halibut! Heard they got good halibut fishin’ down in Newport, not too far from here. And Tillamook County, that’s another good place for salmon and steelhead. Lots of rivers there, they say.
Coos and Coquille Bays, they’re supposed to be real good for early fall salmon. Lots of fish, they say. Prolific, that’s the word they used. Sounded kinda fancy to me, but I reckon it just means there’s a whole heap of fish.
So, there ya have it. Just a little bit of what I know about fishin’ around Coos Bay. It ain’t much, but it’s honest. If you’re lookin’ for a good place to wet a line, this ain’t a bad spot to be. Just remember to be patient, and maybe bring a little luck with ya. And don’t forget your bait! That’s important, too. Good luck and happy fishin’!
