Alright, let’s talk about fishin’ in Connecticut, or “CT” as some folks call it. I ain’t no fancy writer, so I’m gonna tell it to ya straight, like I’m talkin’ to ya over a cup of coffee.
Best Fishin’ Spots in CT, Ya Know?
Now, Connecticut’s got a whole mess of places to wet a line. They got lakes, they got ponds, they even got that big ol’ ocean on the side. But we’re gonna focus on the lakes and ponds, ’cause that’s where most folks like to go. It’s easy and you don’t need no boat.
First off, you gotta find water, right? Can’t catch no fish in a dry field! So, you look for lakes and ponds. They call ’em “bodies of water” sometimes, all fancy-like. But it just means a place where fish swim. And them fish, they like to hang around weeds and stuff. Them weeds, they call ’em “organisms” sometimes, but I just call ’em weeds. Fish hide in ’em, ya see.
- Alexander Lake: This one’s up in the northeast part of the state. Not too big, but holds some nice fish, so they tell me.
- Bantam Lake: Heard good things about this one too. Big enough to get lost on, if you ain’t careful!
- Candlewood Lake: Now, that’s a big one! Lots of folks fish there, so you might have some company.
- Lake Zoar: Another good-sized lake. Plenty of room to find your own spot.
- Mansfield Hollow Lake: This one’s good too. Folks catch all sorts of fish there.
- Mashapaug Lake: Heard tell it’s got some nice bass in it, if that’s what you’re after.
There’s plenty more, mind you. But them’s some of the ones folks talk about. You can look on a map to find ’em. Maps ain’t just for lookin’ pretty, ya know! They help you find things, like where to fish! Just look for them blue spots, that’s where the water is at.
What Kinda Fish You Gonna Catch?
Well, that depends on where you go and what you’re usin’. You got your bass, your perch, your pickerel, your catfish… all sorts! Some folks like to catch them trout in the cold rivers, but I’m talkin’ about lakes and ponds here.
Now, I ain’t gonna tell ya how to fish. Everyones got their own way. But I will say this: be patient. Fishin’ ain’t about catchin’ fish, it’s about spendin’ time outside, enjoyin’ the peace and quiet. And if you happen to catch a fish, well, that’s just a bonus, ain’t it?
Gettin’ Ready to Go Fishin’
You gotta have your gear, right? Your pole, your line, your hooks, your bait… all that stuff. You can get fancy with it if you want, but you don’t have to. An old cane pole and a can of worms will catch fish just fine. Don’t let them fancy stores fool ya.
And don’t forget your license! Gotta have a license to fish in CT, or the game warden will be on ya like a hawk on a field mouse. And nobody wants that. You can get a license online or at most bait shops. It ain’t much money and its good for the whole year. Money goes to keepin’ the lakes and ponds clean and good for the fishes.
Findin’ the Best Spot, Now That’s the Trick!
Look for places with them weeds I was talkin’ about. Fish like cover, keeps ‘em safe and lets ‘em sneak up on food. Look for where the water goes from shallow to deep, ‘cause fish like to hang out there. And don’t be afraid to try different spots. If you ain’t catchin’ nothin’, move around ‘til you find where they’re bitin’.
Keepin’ it Clean, It Ain’t Hard
And one more thing: clean up after yourself! Don’t leave your trash lyin’ around. Nobody wants to fish in a garbage dump. Pack it in, pack it out, that’s what I say. Leave the place nicer than you found it, if you can. And that goes for the fish too. If you catch a fish you ain’t gonna eat, put it back gently. Let it grow bigger for someone else to catch.
So, there you have it. A little bit about fishin’ in CT, from an old lady who’s done her share of it. Get out there and enjoy the outdoors. It’s good for the soul, ya know?
Oh and one more thing! Tell someone where you’re goin’ and when you’ll be back. Just in case, you know? Better safe than sorry, that’s what I always say.
