Well, lemme tell ya about this here Fireman’s Pond. It’s in a place called Redmond, which I reckon is in Oregon. Heard folks talkin’ about it. Now, this pond, it ain’t nothin’ fancy, but it’s somethin’ special for the young’uns.
See, every year they dump a bunch of fish in there for the kids. Little ones, 13 and under. They don’t need no fancy licenses or nothin’. Just bring a pole and try their luck. It’s a good thing, gettin’ them kids outside, away from them screens and such.
- They say the pond’s got all sorts of warm water fish. I dunno what kind, just fish, ya know? Swimmin’ around, waitin’ to be caught.
- Now, I ain’t no expert, but I heard tell the best ponds for raisin’ fish are them tarp ones. Says the fish grow faster and healthier. But this Fireman’s Pond, it’s just a regular ol’ pond, I think.
They was sayin’ somethin’ about how big a koi pond should be. Koi, them fancy lookin’ fish. Said they like big ponds. But this here pond, it ain’t for koi, it’s for the kids and their fishin’. So I don’t reckon it matters how big it is, long as it’s got fish.
Heard somethin’ awful though. Just a month back, they had that fishin’ fair for the kids. Dumped a whole mess of fish in there. Then, bam! Hundreds of ’em dead. Floatin’ on top, poor things. City’s lookin’ into it, tryin’ to figure out what happened. Makes ya sad, thinkin’ about all them kids missin’ out on catchin’ a fish.
This pond, it ain’t hard to find, they say. East side of Redmond, between Highway 126 and Veterans Way. Never been there myself, but sounds easy enough. Heard tell there’s a UPS Store and some old timey district nearby. Don’t mean much to me, but maybe you city folks know what that’s about.
They was talkin’ about other places too, Crane Prairie Reservoir, Haystack Reservoir, Lake Billy Chinook, Ochoco Reservoir. All fancy names. But Fireman’s Pond, that’s the one for the kids. Simple, easy, and usually full of fish, ‘cept for that mess with the dead ones.
I hope they figure out what happened. Kids need a place to go, to have some fun. And catchin’ a fish, there ain’t nothin’ like it. Even if it’s just a little ol’ fish from Fireman’s Pond.
So, if you got young’uns, and you’re in Redmond, Oregon, take ’em to Fireman’s Pond. Let ’em try their luck. Just hope them fish are still swimmin’ and not floatin’ on top.
