Well, let me tell ya about fishin’ at Cultus Lake. It ain’t no fancy place, but folks say there’s fish in there, and that’s good enough for me.
Fishin’ at Cultus Lake ain’t always easy, mind you. Sometimes you sit there all day and catch nothin’ but a sunburn. But then there’s days when the fish are bitin’ like crazy, and you pull ’em in one after another. That’s when it’s fun, y’know?
I heard tell there’s all sorts of fish in that lake. Chinook Salmon, they say, big ones too. And some kinda trout, Cutthroat and Brown, I think they called ’em. Then there’s them Smallmouth Bass, them little fellers are fun to catch, even if they ain’t the biggest. And carp, them bottom feeders, they’re in there too, I guess. I ain’t picky, long as it bites, I’ll reel it in.
Now, if you’re gonna fish there, you gotta know a thing or two. First off, you gotta go deep. Them fish, they like to hang out down low, ‘specially in the mornin’. Use them little jigglin’ spoons, they call ’em, or somethin’ that looks like a little fish. Troll along the west side, that’s what I heard, and get there early, before the sun gets too high.
- Use small wobbling spoons, they say they work good.
- Fish deep, like 50 feet or so, that’s where the big ones are.
- Go early in the mornin’, the fish bite better then.
- Troll along the west side of the lake, that’s a good spot.
Some folks use worms, big ol’ dew worms. They work pretty good, I hear. And them dough balls, them little balls of bread, them fish like those too. If you’re fishin’ in the shallow part, where there’s all them sticks and weeds, you might wanna use a float. Keeps your hook from gettin’ stuck, and you can see when a fish is nibblin’. That float bobbin’ up and down, that’s a good sign, y’know.
I ain’t no expert, mind you. I just fish the way my pappy taught me. Keep it simple, that’s what he always said. Don’t need no fancy gear, just a rod and reel, some bait, and a little bit of patience. And maybe a hat, to keep the sun outta your eyes.
Now, they say there’s all sorts of people fishin’ at Cultus Lake. Some fellers in boats, some on the docks, some just standin’ on the shore. Makes no difference to me, long as they ain’t crowdin’ my spot. And there’s even some kinda special fish in there, they say. Little tiny ones, Pygmy Sculpin and Sockeye Salmon, somethin’ like that. But I ain’t never seen ’em. Too small, I reckon.
Main Beach, that’s a popular spot, they say. Lots of folks swimmin’ and sunbathin’ there too. But I like to find a quieter spot, where I can just sit and watch the water. It’s peaceful, y’know? Just you and the fish, and the sound of the birds singin’. That’s what I like about fishin’. It ain’t just about catchin’ fish, it’s about gettin’ away from it all.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a place to fish, Cultus Lake ain’t a bad choice. Just remember what I told ya, go deep, use the right bait, and get there early. And don’t forget your patience, ’cause you might need it. But who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky and catch a big one. And that’ll make it all worth it, won’t it?
And one more thing, they got them bass in there, them smallmouth fellers, somebody put ’em in there a few years back. They ain’t supposed to be there, but they are. So, if you catch one, don’t be surprised. Just reel it in and enjoy the fight. That’s what fishin’ is all about, ain’t it? The fight and the thrill of the catch.
