Alright, let’s talk about this Kauai fishin’ thing, ya know? Folks always askin’ me, “When’s the best time to go fishin’ in Kauai?” Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t that simple. Fishin’ is fishin’, sometimes you catch somethin’, sometimes you don’t. But I’ll give ya the lowdown, best I can.
Best Time for Fishin’ in Kauai? Well, it Depends…
Now, they say June is good for some tuna and marlin. Don’t know much about them fancy fish, but folks seem to like ’em. Heard tell you gotta go out deep for them big fellas. That ain’t for me, I like to stay closer to shore, ya know? Less chance of gettin’ seasick that way. June 2023 they were catchin’ them tunas and marlins pretty good, or so I heard.
Then there’s that May time, first week or so, they say. Mahi-Mahi, Spearfish, Wahoo, Ono, and Blue Marlin… sounds like a whole lotta fancy names to me. But if you’re into that sort of thing, May 2022 was the time to go accordin’ to some folks. I tell ya, I just like catchin’ somethin’ I can eat, don’t care much about the names.
- Mahi-Mahi: They say these are good eatin’. Look kinda funny though, all colorful and such.
- Spearfish: Never caught one myself, but I hear they got a pointy nose.
- Wahoo and Ono: Sound like train whistles to me! But folks say they taste alright.
- Blue Marlin: Big ol’ fish, takes a strong fella to reel one of them in.
Now, November 2023, that was a good time too, from what I hear. Lots of “top catches” they said. Again, with the fancy words. But if you wanna know when the fish are bitin’ in the Kauai Channel, well, that’s a whole ‘nother story. They got apps for that now, can you believe it? Apps for fishin’! Back in my day, you just went out and hoped for the best. But these youngsters, they gotta have their gadgets.
Freshwater Fishin’ in Kauai
Now, if you ain’t into that ocean fishin’, there’s always the freshwater. Peacock Bass, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Bluegill Sunfish, and Rainbow Trout… They got all sorts in them rivers and streams. I ain’t much of a freshwater fisherwoman myself, but I know folks who are. They say it’s a whole different kind of fishin’. More peaceful, maybe. Less chance of gettin’ eaten by a shark, that’s for sure.
Tips and Tricks (From an Old Timer)
Alright, lemme give you some tips, even though I ain’t no expert. First off, ya gotta be patient. Fishin’ ain’t a race. You gotta wait for the fish to come to you. Second, ya gotta use the right bait. Different fish like different things. Third, ya gotta have the right tackle. Don’t go tryin’ to catch a big ol’ marlin with a little ol’ pole, ya hear? And fourth, most important of all, ya gotta have fun. If you ain’t havin’ fun, what’s the point?
Kauai Fishing Spots and Resources
There’s this Mele Kai fella, he catches Ahi in the wintertime. Says he loves Kauai fishin’. Got a website too, , or you can call him at (808) 246-4784. Says his smaller boat is doin’ real good. He probably knows more than me, so you might wanna check him out. He has his own “fishing insights and expert advice on techniques and tackle” he says. Sound pretty fancy to me.
Anyways, that’s about all I know about fishin’ in Kauai. It’s a good place to fish, that’s for sure. Just gotta be patient, use the right bait, and have a little bit of luck. And don’t forget to bring a hat and some sunscreen, that sun can be brutal out there.
Best of luck and tight lines! Remember to check local regulations, follow guidelines and stay safe.
