Well, I’ll tell ya, catching a big ol’ smallmouth bass, that’s somethin’ else. I heard tell of a fella, caught a six-pounder, a real monster, outta Baptiste Lake. Said he was usin’ one of them spinnerbaits. Imagine that! Six pounds! That’s a fish big enough to feed a family, ain’t it?
Now, them fish, they grow at different speeds, ya know. A little fifteen-incher might be just a young’un, three or four years old, or maybe even a slow-growin’ five-year-old. But a big ‘un, like that six-pounder, well, he’s been around a while. Could be anywhere from six to sixteen years old, I reckon. That’s a lot of swimmin’ and eatin’!
Fishin’ line’s important too, don’tcha forget. They say a six-pound test line can handle a fish up to four or five pounds, if you’re careful. But you gotta be gentle, see? Can’t just yank on it, or you’ll lose ‘im for sure. Them big fish, they fight hard! Gotta play ’em a bit, tire ’em out.
Most places, a two or three pound bass is a good size. Up in Maine, they say there ain’t many bigger than four pounds. But then you got places like Lake Ontario and that St. Lawrence River, they got some real giants in there. I heard tell they got them zebra mussels up there, and them gobies, and them fish just grow like weeds. Makes you wonder, don’t it?
- And it ain’t just up north neither. They got big smallmouth down south too. Pickwick Lake, they say, is a good spot. That’s in Tennessee, I believe. So, you don’t gotta go all the way up to Canada to catch a big one.
- Lures, well, that’s a whole ‘nother story. Folks use all sorts of things. Them spinnerbaits work, that fella proved that. But I’ve seen fellas use all kinds of crankbaits, plastic worms, you name it. I guess it just depends on the day, and what them fish are feelin’ like.
Now, I ain’t no expert, mind you. Just a plain ol’ person who likes to fish. But I know a big fish when I see one. And that six-pound smallmouth, well, that’s a trophy in anyone’s book. Makes me want to go out there and try my luck, even if I just catch a little one. It’s the gettin’ out there that counts, ain’t it? Bein’ out in nature, feelin’ the sun on your face, the wind in your hair. That’s what it’s all about.
And speaking of fishin’, I saw some fellas fishin’ up in Green Bay, in them upper bays. Said they were catchin’ some nice smallmouth up there. One fella, he was showin’ off his new reels. Said they were the best he ever used. Guess havin’ good equipment helps, but it ain’t everything. You still gotta know how to fish, where to fish, and you gotta have a little bit of luck on your side too.
So, if you’re lookin’ to catch a big smallmouth, remember what I told ya. Find a good spot, use the right line and lure, and be patient. And who knows, maybe you’ll be the one tellin’ the story of the next six-pounder. It’s a big world out there, with plenty of fish to be caught. Just gotta get out there and try!
