Well now, let me tell ya about a place called Harriet Lake, up there in Oregon, just right off the Mount Hood National Forest. Oh, it’s a real peaceful spot for fishin’ if you ask me, and it ain’t too far from where folks around Portland might go to catch a good meal of fish. You ain’t got to be a fancy fisherman to enjoy it, neither. Just bring yourself a rod, a little bait, and maybe some patience, ’cause those fish don’t always bite when you want ’em to!
Harriet Lake, you see, is a small place, just 22 acres of water, but don’t let its size fool ya! It’s been stocked up good with all sorts of trout, so folks come from near and far to try their luck. I’ve heard they even throw in some rainbow trout every now and then. Now, that’s the good kind of fish to catch, ‘cause they’re pretty and they fight good when you’re pullin’ ‘em in. Folks also say you can catch cutthroat and even brown trout if you’re lucky. I ain’t one to complain, though, just a good ol’ trout’s fine by me!
Now, I know a lot of folks come for the fishin’, but don’t forget, this here lake’s also a good spot for campin’. It’s quiet, and the air smells so fresh, you might just fall asleep under the stars before you even get your tent up! Ain’t nothing like the peace and quiet out there. It ain’t too crowded, neither, so you can sit back and enjoy the sound of the water lapping against the shore without all that hustle and bustle of city life. I reckon that’s why so many folk like to camp by Harriet Lake.
Some folks like to come early in the season, like in the springtime, when the lake is stocked with fresh fish. I hear they drop in about 1,400 trophy-sized fish come the end of May. Now that’s a big ol’ batch of fish! So if you’re after something with a bit of size, that might be the time to head on up. I ain’t no expert, but I reckon that fishin’ at Harriet Lake can be mighty fine if you time it right.
One thing I gotta mention though, and I hate to be the one to say it, but if you’re headin’ up there in the winter months, you best check the weather first. I hear the road up to the lake can get mighty tricky with all that snow. Roads can get blocked, and it ain’t no fun tryin’ to make it up there when everything’s frozen solid. Best to plan your trip when the weather’s nice and the roads are clear, especially if you’re driving from down below.
If you’re comin’ for the fishin’, I’d say it’s best to bring your own gear. There’s some rentals nearby, but I always find it better to just bring what you know works best for ya. And don’t forget your fishing license, either. You’d hate to get up there and find out you can’t fish ’cause you forgot to get that! A little bit of trout and a big ol’ steak for dinner sure tastes better when you ain’t breakin’ the law.
While you’re out there, you might want to pack a little lunch, ‘cause you never know how long you’ll be sittin’ by the water. Sometimes those fish just ain’t hungry, and you gotta wait ’til they decide it’s time to eat. It can be a long day, but it sure is nice when you finally hook one. You’ll get a good meal, and a good story to tell back at the campsite.
Now, I reckon I’ve about said what needs sayin’ ‘bout Harriet Lake. If you want to head up there for fishin’ and campin’, I say you give it a try. It’s not too crowded, it’s real quiet, and the fishin’ is decent if you’re willin’ to put in the time. Just make sure you check the weather and get all your gear in order before you go. It’s a place where you can get a nice, peaceful day in, with plenty of trout to catch and a good bit of nature to enjoy.
