Well now, let me tell ya ’bout that Henry Hagg Lake. It’s out there in Oregon, not too far from that Forest Grove, y’know? It’s one of them big ol’ lakes that ain’t natural, it’s made by folks, with that Scoggins Creek bein’ the reason it’s there. They dammed it up, and now we got this big ol’ artificial lake that’s good for all sorts of things. Some folks go there to fish, others like to hike ’round the edges, and some even ride them mountain bikes on the trails. Don’t matter what you’re into, you’ll find somethin’ to do ’round there.
Now, this lake ain’t no little puddle in the woods, no ma’am. It’s got a surface area of ’round 1,113 acres! Big enough to spread out a blanket and feel like you ain’t never gonna run out of space. And that water, it’s got a capacity of 60,000 acre-feet, whatever that means, but I reckon it means there’s plenty of water for fish and folks to enjoy. You’ll see a lotta folks fishin’ for smallmouth bass, they say it’s good fishin’ out there, but I’m not the one to ask. I ain’t much of a fisherman myself.
One thing I gotta tell ya though, if you’re thinkin’ about takin’ a trip there, it’s a nice spot for walkin’ and even bike ridin’. They got these trails, nice and wide, and folks say it’s a bit challenging but not too bad for most folks. Now, I ain’t no young sprout, but I still manage to get ’round some of the easier ones, and let me tell ya, it’s mighty peaceful when you get out there early in the mornin’, ‘fore all them other folks show up. But I suppose if you like a bit more company, you can always head out later in the day, ’cause folks do tend to come and go.
Trail Details:
- Length: 13.3 miles
- Difficulty: Moderate, but still manageable for most folks.
- Time to Complete: ‘Bout 4 hours and 42 minutes if you’re movin’ at a decent pace.
- Best for: Birdwatchin’, hikein’, and bike ridin’.
There’s a few different places you can start the trail from, so ya ain’t gotta worry if the main one’s too crowded. Ain’t no fancy fees for just wanderin’ around, but if you plan to stay all day, they do ask for a small fee. They got season passes too, if you’re the type to visit often. I ain’t sure if it’s worth it for me, but it might be for someone else. You’ll also find that the area ain’t exactly quiet, but then again, when is the world ever quiet? Still, you can find peace if you time it right.
Oh, and let me tell ya somethin’ else about the lake, it ain’t just for the humans. There’s plenty of birds and critters out there. You can sit by the shore and watch the water, see the ducks and other birds floatin’ by. It’s real peaceful if you get the right time of day, especially at dawn or dusk. That’s when it feels like the world slows down and you can just sit back and breathe in that fresh air, like life’s a bit simpler than it is back home in the busy parts of town.
If you’re lookin’ at the lake from a map, you’ll see the coordinates are 45.4865, but I wouldn’t be too worried ’bout that if I was ya. Just follow the signs, they’ll get ya there. Folks always say the map helps, but all you really need is a good sense of direction, and the rest of the way’ll just show itself to ya. Ain’t that right?
So, if you ever find yourself in Oregon, and you’re feelin’ the need for a good day out, head on over to Henry Hagg Lake. It’s worth the trip, and who knows, you might even catch a fish or two if you’re lucky. Either way, you’ll have yourself a good time.
