Well, if you ever get the chance to visit Oregon, you might wanna take a little trip up to Skookum Lake. Now, don’t go thinkin’ it’s some easy walk ’cause it ain’t! It’s a bit of a hike, but I tell ya, the views are worth every step. It’s tucked away up in the Mount Hood National Forest, a real hidden gem if you ask me. People used to be able to drive up right to the lake, but a big ol’ storm back in 1996 washed out the road. So now, you gotta put in a little elbow grease to get there.
Now, this here trail’s about 15 miles long, and I ain’t kiddin’ when I say it’s got some hills on it. You’ll be climbin’ up and down, so if you ain’t used to a little workout, you might feel it in your bones by the time you get to the lake. But let me tell you, the sight when you get there, it’s just somethin’ special. The water’s clear as glass, and you’ll see the tall trees all around. It’s so quiet, you’d think the whole world stopped just for you.
Skookum Lake ain’t just for lookin’ at though. Folks come from all over to fish. They say the fishin’ there is real good in the summer, so if you got a line and a pole, you might wanna try your luck. Ain’t no shortage of campsites around either. You can set up camp right near the lake and spend a couple days enjoyin’ the peace and quiet. Just don’t forget to bring your bug spray, though, them mosquitoes can be real pesky sometimes!
Now, if you’re worried about where to park your car, don’t. There’s a few places up along the way to leave your ride, but like I said, you won’t be drivin’ all the way to the lake anymore. You’ll have to walk a little, but it ain’t too bad. Just make sure you got a good pair of shoes, ’cause the trail can be a bit rough in spots. And don’t forget your water, especially if you’re walkin’ up in the summer heat. Ain’t nothin’ worse than runnin’ out of water halfway up the hill!
As you’re walkin’ along, you’ll probably see a few folks headin’ in the other direction. Some of ’em might be lookin’ to catch a fish, others might just be there for a good ol’ fashioned nature walk. The trail’s pretty easy to follow, but if you’re not too sure about where you’re goin’, there’s always plenty of signs to point ya in the right direction. And if you’re lucky, you might even get a view of Mount Hood in the distance. It stands up tall, lookin’ like a big ol’ mountain watchin’ over everything.
And let me tell ya, there’s somethin’ about bein’ out there by the lake. The air’s so fresh, and the smell of the trees just fills you up. Ain’t no stress, no rush, just you and nature. So if you’re lookin’ for a getaway, or just a place to sit back and think, Skookum Lake’s the place to be. It don’t matter if you’re there for a day or a whole weekend, you’ll leave feelin’ a whole lot better than when you came.
So, pack up your gear, lace up your boots, and head out to Skookum Lake. It’s a place worth seein’, and I reckon you’ll be glad you did. Just remember, it’s a hike, but it’s a good one. You ain’t gonna regret it!
