Well, let me tell ya ’bout fishin’ on that there Lake Winnebago. Folks been askin’ me, “How’s the fishin’?” So, I figured I’d spill the beans, you know, give ya the real scoop.
First off, gotta check the weather. Can’t be goin’ out there if it’s blowin’ a gale, right? Common sense, I say. And the fish, them critters are picky. Sometimes they bitin’, sometimes they ain’t. You gotta be patient, that’s for sure.
Now, this year, the ice, it went away kinda quick. Made it easy to get to the open water. No more choppin’ holes, thank goodness! My old bones ain’t what they used to be. So, open water fishin’ it is! Heard tell some folks were catchin’ perch and white bass. Sounded like they had a good ol’ time. Good for them, I say.
Lake Winnebago Fishin’ Report: What I’ve Heard
I ain’t been out there myself lately, back’s been actin’ up somethin’ fierce, but I got my ears to the ground. Folks talkin’, you know. They say December last year, fishin’ was pretty good. Don’t know ’bout now, but I reckon it’s worth a shot. You can find some reports online too, if you’re fancy like that. They got pictures and all. I just listen to the fellas at the bait shop, though. They know what’s what.
- Weather: Always check the weather, like I said. Don’t be a fool.
- Fish Activity: Fish bite sometimes, sometimes they don’t. That’s fishin’ for ya.
- What’s Biting?: Heard tell perch and white bass are bitin’. Maybe some walleye too, if you’re lucky.
Ice Fishin’ on Lake Winnebago – When It’s Cold Enough
Now, when it’s cold, that ice fishin’ is somethin’ else. Them fellas go out on the east side, near the breaks and reefs. Said the fish like them spots. Early on, right after the freeze-up, fishin’ close to the shore is good. Later on, them walleye, they move out to the deeper water. And you want a day that ain’t too cold, not too warm, just right. That’s when the walleye are bitin’ best. At least that’s what they say.
Lake Winnebago, they say it’s the biggest lake in Wisconsin. And the walleye fishin’ there? Folks say it’s the best in the whole country! Can you believe that? Me neither, but that’s what they say.
Fishin’ Tournaments and Such
There’s these fishin’ tournaments too, the Winnebago Walleye Series, they call it. Catch and release, you know. They throw the fish back. Sounds like fun, I guess, if you’re into that kinda thing. Prizes and all. Launches from Malone, that’s on the east side of the lake. Heard there’s a fella, Kendall Kamke, he’s a fish biologist. Smart fella, knows all about them fish. He keeps an eye on things, makes sure there’s plenty of fish for everyone.
My Advice? Just Get Out There!
So, that’s the lowdown on Lake Winnebago fishin’, as best as I can tell ya. Weather, fish, ice, open water, it’s all part of it. Best thing to do is just get out there and try your luck. Bring a warm coat, some bait, and a whole lotta patience. And maybe a thermos of somethin’ hot to drink. That always helps. Good luck, and tight lines, as they say. Though I never really understood why they say that. Lines ain’t supposed to be tight, are they? They’re supposed to bend when a fish bites! Anyways, you get the idea.
Remember: Fishin’ ain’t just about catchin’ fish. It’s about bein’ outside, enjoyin’ the fresh air, and maybe havin’ a good story to tell later. Even if you don’t catch a thing, it’s better than sittin’ around watchin’ that darn TV all day. That’s what I say, anyway.
And don’t forget your fishin’ license! Them game wardens, they don’t mess around. They’ll fine ya quicker than a catfish can swallow a minnow. So, be smart, be safe, and have fun. That’s the most important thing.
Well, I reckon that’s all I got to say about fishin’ on Lake Winnebago. Hope it helps ya out some. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go soak my feet. Standin’ here talkin’ all this time has made ‘em ache somethin’ awful.
