Well now, if yer thinkin’ ’bout fishin’ down at South Padre Island, ya gotta be ready for all sorts of fish, and there’s plenty to catch if ya know where to look. I’ve been hearin’ all sorts of reports from folks down there, and lemme tell ya, the fishin’ ain’t bad at all, especially if you’re out there on the right days.
First off, let’s talk about them trout. Folks been catchin’ ’em real good out there on the Gas Well Flats and up around them shacks by the intercoastal. The trout love that area, and it don’t matter if it’s a sunny day or cloudy day – they’re still bitin’. Now, on them cloudy days, the fish tend to be more active, swimmin’ around looking for food. They don’t like the bright sun much, so cloudy days can be a good time to head out. Same goes for a little rain – when it’s drizzlin’ a bit, the fish just seem to get a hunger on ’em, what with all the insects and bait gettin’ washed into the water.
Now, if you’re after redfish, I gotta tell ya, the north end of Gas Well Flats is the place to be. Drift around there with some live shrimp under a popping cork, or throw out a little cut mullet, and you just might reel in a nice redfish. You can’t go wrong with that setup. The redfish love that spot, and you’ll find ’em makin’ their rounds there most days.
Other fishin’ spots around South Padre Island got their own little surprises too. Over in the south bay, you can catch all sorts of small channel catfish, sand trout, and plenty of croakers. If you’ve got the patience to sit for a spell, you’ll be pullin’ in a good mess of ’em. They’re a bit smaller, but there’s plenty of ’em to keep you busy.
Now, if yer new to fishin’ around here, let me tell ya, the tide matters a lot. Fish like to come in and out with the tides, and if ya time it right, you can catch ’em right when they’re hungry. The high tides bring ’em closer to shore, and the low tides push ’em back out, so if you keep an eye on them tide tables, you can plan your fishin’ trips to hit the right times.
Some folks also swear by the moon phases. They say when the moon’s full or new, that’s when the fish are most active, but who knows? I just know the fish are always bitin’ a little better when the sky’s overcast, and it’s rainin’ just a bit.
If you’re wonderin’ about the sea temperature, well, today it’s sittin’ at about 77°F. That’s just about perfect for fishin’. Ain’t too cold, ain’t too hot – right in the middle. Fish don’t mind that kind of weather, so it’s a good time to get out there.
But I reckon the best time to go fishin’ is when you feel like it. If you’ve got the time, the patience, and a little bit of luck, you’ll catch somethin’. And if ya don’t, well, there’s always tomorrow, right? Ain’t no harm in givin’ it another go.
