Oregon, oh yeah, that’s a place where you can catch some fish, they say. Lingcod, that’s what they call ’em. Big ones, small ones, all sorts. People go out on boats, spend all day trying to hook one.
You gotta know where to go, though. Not just any ol’ spot will do. They say these lingcod, they like the rocks and the sandy bottoms. Deep water, too. Fifty feet, two hundred feet, even a thousand feet down, can you believe that? Water’s cold down there, I reckon.
Astoria, they talk about that place. Buoy 10, Tongue Point, Yaquina Head. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But that’s where they say the lingcod are. Lots of ’em, swimming around, waiting to get caught.

Now, you can’t just catch as many as you want. They got rules, you know. Two fish. That’s all you’re allowed. And they gotta be big enough, too. Twenty-two inches, they say. Got to measure ’em, make sure they’re long enough. Don’t want to get in trouble, do ya?
Some of them lingcod, they get big, real big. Five feet long, like a man! But most of the ones they catch around here, they’re two or three feet. Still a good size, I suppose. Enough for a meal, that’s for sure.
They’re ugly things, these lingcod. Gray or brown, with spots all over. Big mouths, lots of teeth. Mean looking, real mean. But they taste good, they say. Fried up in a pan, with a little bit of butter. Makes your mouth water just thinking about it.
Fishing for them, it ain’t easy. You need a boat, you need the right gear. And you need patience, lots of patience. Sit out there all day, waiting for a bite. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don’t. That’s fishing for ya.
Brookings, that’s another place they talk about. Down south, they say. Best place for lingcod, best place for bottom fish. Charters, they got charters. Take you out on a boat, show you where the fish are. Make it easy, I guess. But it costs money, you know. Nothing’s free these days.
Rewarding, they say it’s rewarding. Catching them lingcod. Feels good to bring home a big one, show it off to your friends. Makes you feel proud, like you accomplished something. But it’s hard work, don’t forget that.
So, if you’re thinking about fishing for lingcod in Oregon, go ahead. Give it a try. But be prepared, be patient. And follow the rules, don’t be greedy. Two fish is enough, remember that.
