Oh, I tell ya, there’s this lake out there in Oregon called Henry Hagg Lake. It ain’t no ordinary lake neither! It’s big—real big—about 1,113 acres of water, and I hear it’s got a capacity of near 60,000 acre-feet of water. Now, that’s a whole lotta water, ain’t it? Folks from all around come to see it, fish in it, hike along it, and do all sorts of things. If you ever get out to that part of the world, you oughta check it out. It’s in a place called Scoggins Valley, not far from Portland, just a little ways from Forest Grove, so it ain’t too far for a nice day trip.
Now, I ain’t no expert on maps or anything, but I heard tell there’s a map of Henry Hagg Lake folks can look at to see where all the good spots are. There’s a lotta ways to get to the lake, see? There’s a few trailheads around, and you can hike or bike around the whole lake if you feel like it. The loop is about 13.3 miles long, so it ain’t no small thing. Takes most folks a good 4 hours or so to walk it, give or take. It ain’t real easy, but it ain’t the hardest hike neither. You get yourself some nice views of the water, the trees, and all them birds flying around. It’s a nice peaceful spot if you catch it at the right time of day.
Henry Hagg Lake and its Features
- The lake is artificial, which means it ain’t naturally there, but it’s been around for a long time now. They made it by damming up Scoggins Creek, and now it’s a popular place for all kinds of folks.
- It’s a great spot for fishing too. They stock the lake, so you can catch yourself some fish, no problem. And there’s even a fishing map available, with all the spots marked out. Makes it easy to find where the fish are biting.
- If you’re the type that likes to take a boat out on the water, there’s boat launching facilities. Two of ‘em, I reckon. So you can get your little boat or kayak out there and enjoy the water.
- And if you get hungry after all that hiking and boating, don’t worry. There’s plenty of picnic areas where you can sit down and enjoy a nice lunch. There’s a little fee for day use, but it ain’t too much—just enough to keep the place nice and clean.
It’s a real good place for bird watching too, if you’re into that sort of thing. I’ve heard people talk about seeing all sorts of birds in them parts, so if you bring your binoculars, you’re in for a treat. And if you got yourself a good fishing rod, you might even catch some of the fish swimming in that big ol’ lake. But let me tell you, it’s best to go early or later in the day, when there ain’t so many people. That way, you can enjoy the place all to yourself for a while.
Now, I’ve mentioned the trails a couple times, and I reckon you might wanna know more about them. I can’t say I’m no expert on hiking, but I hear there’s over 15 miles of trails out there around Henry Hagg Lake. Some are easy, some are a little more challenging, but there’s somethin’ for everybody. Whether you’re walkin’ slow or fast, you’ll see some beautiful sights. There’s trees, wildlife, and of course, that big ol’ lake in the middle of it all.
If you don’t feel like doin’ all that walkin’, you can always just sit back and enjoy the view. Sometimes, I hear it gets pretty quiet, and that’s the best time to go. You can hear the birds chirpin’, the water lapping up against the shore, and not much else. Real peaceful, I tell ya. But if you like a little action, you can always come when there’s more folks around. I reckon that’s when the boats and bikes are all out there, and the place feels more alive.
Other Things You Might Wanna Know
- The park is open year-round, and though they charge a small fee for day use, it’s well worth it. You can even get yourself a season pass if you plan on comin’ back a lot.
- The lake is manmade, but it’s been around long enough that it feels just as natural as any other lake you might visit. The water’s deep, and the surroundings are nice and green, especially in the spring and summer.
- There’s also a depth map of the lake for those who are interested in knowing just how deep the water goes. Now, I don’t know all the details, but I hear it’s a good resource for people out there fishin’ or boatin’ on the lake.
If you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to do around Portland, and you don’t mind a little adventure, Henry Hagg Lake is definitely worth a visit. Whether you’re walkin’ the trails, fishin’ off the dock, or just sittin’ and enjoyin’ the view, there’s plenty to see and do. Just don’t forget to pack yourself a good lunch and some water, and make sure to check the weather before you go. Ain’t nothin’ worse than a soggy hike!
