Well, I’ll tell ya about fishin’ at Odell Lake, though I ain’t no fancy expert or nothin’. Just a plain ol’ person who likes to drop a line now and then.
Odell Lake, that’s where the kokanee are at. Lots of folks go there for them kokanee. You can catch a whole mess of ’em, 25 a day they say! Ain’t no size limit neither, so you can keep the little fellers and the big ones too. Don’t go lookin’ for no ice fishin’ though, they don’t allow that there.
Now, I heard tell they stock the lake with trout, rainbows and browns and such. But they ain’t doin’ that right now, gonna start up again in March of 2025. They got a schedule for it somewhere, if you wanna look it up. And maps too, showin’ you where to go. Handy, I guess, if you don’t know the lake like the back of your hand. But me, I just go where the fish are bitin’.
Fishin’ from a boat is the best way to go at Odell, that’s for sure. But you gotta watch out for them afternoon winds. That lake can get real choppy, real fast. I seen it myself, whitecaps and all. Scared me half to death, it did! They got motorboats and rowboats, whatever you fancy. Just be careful out there, that’s all I’m sayin’.
Some fellas, they’re all scientific about it, collectin’ data on the kokanee and the rainbows. ODFW and Kokanee Power, they call themselves. They clip the fins of the little fish they put in the lake, so they can tell which ones are which, I reckon. They ask for help too, but I ain’t got time for that. I’m too busy fishin’!
I heard some fellas went fishin’ there lately, Work Sharp and Mack’s Lure fellas with some fella named Rich Harrod. Said openin’ day was kinda slow, surprisin’ like. Mornin’s were cold, and so was the fishin’, they said. But they was lookin’ for some late season kokanee action, and Odell’s the place for that, on account of it bein’ a deep lake, or so they say. Located on Highway 58, central Oregon.
- Kokanee: Lots of ’em, 25 a day limit, no size limit.
- Trout: Rainbows and browns, they stock ’em, but not right now. Gonna start again in March 2025.
- Boats: Best way to fish, but watch out for them winds.
Now, they got other places around there too, like Haystack Reservoir. Got bass and crappie there, and some trout too. But I ain’t been there myself. I stick to Odell, mostly. It’s a good lake, even if the wind does kick up sometimes. And you can catch a whole mess of kokanee, if you know what you’re doin’. And even if you don’t, you might get lucky! That’s fishin’ for ya. Sometimes you catch ’em, sometimes you don’t. But it’s always a good day to be out on the water, breathin’ in the fresh air and listenin’ to the birds sing.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a place to go fishin’, give Odell Lake a try. Just be sure to bring a warm jacket and a life vest. And don’t forget your fishin’ pole!
