Well now, let me tell ya ’bout this Pelton Dam Campground place. It’s out there in Madras, Oregon, ya know. I ain’t never been much for fancy words, so I’ll just tell it like it is.
First off, they got all sorts of places to lay yer head. Campsites, they call ‘em. Sixty-seven of ‘em, last I heard. Some are just plain ol’ spots for yer tent, and some got them fancy hook-ups for ‘lectricity. Don’t ask me what that means, but some folks like it.
Now, they got these things called cabins too. Like little wooden houses. And somethin’ called “yomes.” Sounds like somethin’ outta space, don’t it? They say it’s like a mix between a yurt and a dome. Never seen one myself, but folks seem to like ’em.

This place ain’t hard to find neither. It’s on Pelton Dam Road. Just head northwest on that US 26 road if you’re comin’ from the north. Nine and a half miles, they say. Can’t miss it, even if you tried. They even got numbers for them GPS thingamajigs if you’re into that. Something like 44.684740 and -121.237410. Don’t ask me what they mean, I just write ’em down like they told me. Address is 3300 Pelton Dam Rd, Madras, OR 97741, easy enough to remember if you got a good head on ya.
They got water, too. And bathrooms. Clean ones, they say. And showers! Imagine that, showers in the middle of nowhere. Folks say it’s all well kept and the prices ain’t too bad neither. I reckon that’s important if you’re watchin’ yer pennies. Heard tell they have some activities too. Guess it’s not all just sittin’ around and swatting flies.
You can even go online and book yer spot ahead of time. Ain’t that somethin’? Used to be you just showed up and hoped for the best, but now they got computers and whatnot. Makes it easy, I guess, if you’re into that kinda thing.
Now, I heard tell there’s another campground nearby called Lava Flow Campground. But they don’t take no reservations, it’s first come, first served. So you gotta be quick if you wanna stay there. I ain’t never been, but some folks prefer it that way. Less fuss, maybe.
This Pelton Dam place, it’s right there by the dam, ya know. Big ol’ thing, holds back a whole lotta water. Pretty to look at, I guess, if you like that kinda thing. They say it’s a “serene and rustic outdoor retreat.” Sounds fancy, but all I know is it’s a good place to get away from it all. Quiet, mostly, except for the birds and the crickets. And maybe some folks hollerin’ at their kids.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a place to camp, this Pelton Dam Campground might just be the ticket. Got all the fixins, as they say. Clean bathrooms, water, places to sleep, and even that ‘lectricity stuff if you need it. Just head on down to Madras, Oregon, and see for yerself. Can’t hurt none to take a look.
And one more thing, they say the views are somethin’ special. “Picturesque,” that’s the word they used. Means purdy, I reckon. So, yeah, go on and check it out. You might just like it. It ain’t the Ritz, but it’ll do just fine if you’re lookin’ for a little peace and quiet. And maybe a shower. Don’t forget the bug spray though, them skeeters can be fierce sometimes.
