Alright, let’s talk about catchin’ them salmon, you know, the big fish. Folks call it “salmon trolling tackle,” sounds fancy, but it ain’t that hard. It’s just about gettin’ the right stuff and knowin’ how to use it.
First off, you gotta have a good rod and reel. Don’t go buyin’ some flimsy thing, it won’t hold up to a big salmon. Get somethin’ strong, somethin’ that can handle a fight. And make sure you got plenty of line, them salmon, they like to run.
Now, for the bait, or what they call “lures,” that’s important too. I heard some folks use them salmon eggs, says they work real good. And them little shrimps too, the sandy ones, chinook salmon, they love them. You can even use both at the same time, why not? More bait, more fish, that’s what I say. And them jig things, with the feathers? They call ’em marabou jigs, I seen ’em catch them pink salmon, specially when the water’s low and clear. You can see right through it, them fish ain’t got nowhere to hide.
But sometimes the water ain’t so clear, sometimes it’s muddy. Then you gotta use different stuff. Them spinner things, they work good in muddy water. They spin and shine, get the fishes’ attention, you know?
And then there’s this thing they call “downriggers.” I ain’t too sure how they work, but it helps get your bait down deep, where the big salmon are. Some folks use weights and other things called divers. Same idea, just different ways of doin’ it. Get that bait down deep, that’s the key.
- You gotta think like a fish, see? What do they eat? Smelt, that’s what. Them little silvery fish, salmon love ’em. So, find the smelt, and you’ll find the salmon.
- And you gotta know where to go. They got these “trolling spots,” places where the salmon hang out. You gotta find them spots. Ask around, someone will know. Or just look where all the other boats are, that’s a good sign.
Now, about how fast you go, that matters too. They call it “trolling speed,” but it just means how fast you’re movin’ your boat. Too fast and the salmon won’t bite, too slow and they won’t see your bait. You gotta find that sweet spot. And how deep you go, that’s important too. “Depth,” they call it. Gotta get that bait down where the fish are, not too high, not too low.
I seen this fella on the internet, talkin’ about keepin’ the rods down tight. Said somethin’ about “brine” too, but I didn’t quite catch it. Sounded like he knew what he was talkin’ about though. He was catchin’ fish, that’s for sure. Maybe it’s about keepin’ them rods steady? I don’t know, but sounds important.
And then there’s this river, the Columbia River, they say it’s full of salmon. And they got their own way of doin’ things there. Something about “flashers.” I guess it’s somethin’ shiny that attracts the fish. Makes sense, fish like shiny things, just like magpies do.
Look, there’s all kinds of fancy talk and gadgets, but it all boils down to this: get good gear, get the right bait, find the fish, and get that bait down to ’em. And don’t forget to be patient. Fishin’ ain’t always easy, you gotta put in the time. But when you hook a big salmon, it’s worth it. Nothin’ like the feel of a big fish on the line, fightin’ you every step of the way. That’s what it’s all about.
So, go on out there, get yourself some salmon trolling tackle, and catch some fish. It ain’t rocket science, just good ol’ fashioned fishin’.
