Well, hey there, y’all! Let’s talk about fishin’ at Sardis Lake. I ain’t no fancy expert or nothin’, just a regular person who likes to wet a line. So, here’s the lowdown, plain and simple, like I tell it to my grandkids.
Now, first things first, Sardis Lake, that’s a big ol’ place for sure. Lots of water, and that means lots of fish, if you know where to look and what to do. I heard them fellers at the store talkin’ ’bout “fisheries management” and “flood control reservoirs,” but I just nod and smile. All I care about is catchin’ somethin’!
What kinda fish you after?
- Crappie: Folks say crappie is real good eatin’. You wanna catch ’em, try the spillway, especially in the winter and early spring. But mind you, it depends on when they let the water out of that there reservoir.
- Catfish: Them catfish, they like the spillway too, but mostly in the summer. Big fellers, some of ’em, good for fryin’ up.
- Bass: Now, bass, they’re a bit trickier. You gotta fish early in the mornin’ or late in the evenin’, when the sun ain’t so high. Use them topwater lures or spinnerbaits, whatever them things are. And if it’s the middle of the day, go find them main lake points, the deeper the better. I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout “crankbaits” and “bladed jigs”, sounds fancy, but I just use what I got.
When to go fishin’?
Well, like I said, early and late for bass. But anytime’s a good time, really, if you just wanna relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Them city folks, they always talkin’ ’bout “BiteTime™” on their fancy phones, but I just go when I feel like it. Sometimes you catch somethin’, sometimes you don’t. That’s fishin’, ain’t it?
Where to fish?
Sardis Lake’s got all sorts of spots. You got the main lake, with them points and channels. Then you got the creek and river edges, where the water’s a bit shallower. And don’t forget that spillway, like I told you. Some folks like fishin’ from the bank, some like fishin’ from a boat. Me? I just find a spot that looks fishy and give it a try.
What’s the water like?
Last I heard, the water level was ’bout 239.74 feet, and it’s fallin’ a little bit each day. But that changes all the time, you know. Rain comes, water goes up. Dry spell comes, water goes down. Just gotta pay attention and adjust your fishin’ accordingly. I don’t pay no mind to them numbers too much, just look at the water and you know if it’s too high or too low.
Tips from an old timer
Now, I ain’t got no fancy secrets, but I can tell you a few things I learned over the years. First, be patient. Fishin’ ain’t a race. Second, keep your hook sharp. A dull hook won’t catch nothin’. Third, use bait that the fish like. Worms, minnows, crickets, whatever works. And fourth, don’t be afraid to try different things. If one spot ain’t workin’, move to another. If one bait ain’t workin’, try somethin’ else. That’s how I always done it, and I always catch enough for supper.
So, there you have it. A fishin’ report for Sardis Lake, straight from the heart, no fancy talk. Just go out there, have fun, and maybe you’ll catch a few. And if you see an old lady sittin’ on the bank with a fishin’ pole, be sure to say hi. It might just be me!
Keep it simple and enjoy the outdoors. And don’t forget to bring some snacks! Fishin’ makes a body hungry.
