Well, I tell you what, fishing down St. Augustine way, it’s been somethin’ else lately.
Folks been catchin’ all sorts of fish, you know? I heard some fellas down by the San Sebastian River, they pulled in some pretty good-sized ones. River fishin’ ain’t always my thing, I like the ocean better, but they was braggin’ somethin’ fierce, so it must be alright.
- Pompano
- Whiting
- Other stuff, I can’t rightly remember.
Now, out on the surf, that’s where the real action is, yessir. Them pompano, they been bitin’ like crazy. Folks been catchin’ ’em left and right. And the whiting too! Little fellas, but tasty. You can fry ’em up real nice with some grits, and, oh honey, that’s a meal fit for a king, I tell ya.
I seen some pictures too, folks showin’ off their catches. Big ol’ fish, shiny and silver. Made my mouth water, just lookin’ at ’em. Makes me wanna grab my pole and head on down there myself, but my old bones ain’t what they used to be, you know?
Heard tell there’s these fellas, Captain Troy James and that other bunch, Captain Troy somethin’ or other, they got a business takin’ folks fishin’. They put out these “fishin’ reports,” tellin’ everybody where the fish are bitin’. Sounds fancy, but all it means is they know where the fish be at.
They say them reports are the “go-to source,” whatever that means. I guess it means they know their stuff. They talk about “hotspots” and “best catches.” Sounds like a bunch of city slicker talk to me, but if it helps folks catch fish, then I reckon it’s alright.
I ain’t never been on one of them fancy charter boats, though. I always just fished from the shore, or maybe off a pier if I was feelin’ fancy. But these fellas, they got boats and all the gear, and they take you out to where the big fish are. Expensive, I bet, but some folks got more money than sense, I always say.
Anyway, they been sayin’ the fishin’ is good all over St. Augustine. Whether you’re fishin’ in the river, the surf, or out in the deep water, you got a good chance of catchin’ somethin’. They even got places where you can rent boats and buy bait and tackle, so you ain’t gotta bring nothin’ but yourself and a little bit of luck.
I remember one time, years ago, I caught a fish so big, it almost pulled me right into the water! It was a shark, I think. Big ol’ thing with teeth like razors. I fought that thing for what felt like an hour, and when I finally got it to shore, it was bigger than me! Course, I let it go. No sense in killin’ somethin’ that big. Just wanted to see if I could catch it, you know?
That’s what I love about fishin’. It ain’t just about catchin’ fish. It’s about the fight, the challenge, the peace and quiet of bein’ out on the water. And then, when you do catch somethin’, well, that’s just the icing on the cake.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a good place to go fishin’, St. Augustine is the place to be. They got all kinds of fish, and plenty of places to catch ’em. Just remember to bring your sunscreen, your hat, and a whole lotta patience. And maybe a little bit of luck wouldn’t hurt none neither.
And don’t forget to check them fishin’ reports. Them city slickers might know somethin’ after all. They can tell you where the best fishing spots are, what kind of bait and tackle to use, and what kind of fish you can expect to catch. Saves you a lotta time and trouble, I reckon.
Oh, and one more thing. If you do catch a big one, don’t forget to take a picture! So you can show it off to all your friends and make ’em jealous. That’s half the fun of fishin’, ain’t it?
So there you have it. My two cents on fishin’ in St. Augustine. It’s good, real good. Go on down there and see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
And if you see Captain Troy, tell him that old lady sent ya. He probably won’t know who I am, but that’s alright. Just as long as you catch some fish.
