Alright, let’s talk about this fishin’ stuff around St. Simons Island. I ain’t no fancy fisherman, you know, just an old gal who likes to throw a line in the water now and then. But I hear things, and I see things, and I reckon I can tell ya a thing or two.
What kinda fish you gonna catch? Well, they say there’s Red Fish, Trout, Flounder, Triple Tail, and Jack Crevalle. Sounds like a mouthful, don’t it? I ain’t eaten all them, but I know Red Fish is pretty tasty, and Flounder ain’t bad neither. Them other ones? You’d have to ask someone else.
Now, where to find these fish? Some folks like to go out on them boats, with their fancy gear and all. They call it “guided light tackle and fly fishin’ charters,” but I just call it expensive! Me? I like to keep my feet on the ground.
- You can fish from the beach, they call it “surf castin’.” Just stand there and throw your line out. It’s peaceful, and you might catch somethin’ decent. Them bigger fish, they say they’re further out, but I ain’t got no boat, so I gotta make do.
- Or you can go to the pier, if there’s one around. Easier on the legs, you know. And you can chat with other folks, see what they’re catchin’. Sometimes they share their secrets, sometimes they just brag. That’s fishin’ for ya.
- And then there’s the rivers and creeks, if you can find a good spot. I ain’t gonna tell you my spots, though! You gotta find your own. That’s half the fun of it.
When’s the best time to fish? Well, that’s a tricky one. Fish ain’t got no schedules, you know? They bite when they wanna bite. But folks say the mornin’ and evenin’ are usually pretty good. And you gotta pay attention to the tides. When the water’s movin’, the fish are movin’, and that’s when you got a better chance of catchin’ somethin’.
I heard some fella, Capt. Richard, been fishin’ around these parts for 35 years. He puts out these fishin’ reports. Tells you what’s bitin’ and where. Sounds fancy, but it might be worth checkin’ out. He probably knows more than me, that’s for sure. But I bet he ain’t never caught a fish with a cane pole and a worm like I have!
What kind of bait to use? Well, that depends on what you’re fishin’ for. Shrimp is always a good bet. Live shrimp, if you can get it. Them fish love wiggling things. You can also use worms, or cut bait, or them fancy lures that cost a fortune. I stick with the basics, myself. Ain’t no need to get all complicated.
Folks are always talkin’ about “trophy-worthy fish.” I don’t care about no trophies. I just want to catch somethin’ I can eat. Something fresh and tasty. And if it’s big enough to brag about, well, that’s just a bonus.
There’s this place on 250 Ricefield Way, Brunswick, 31525. I hear it’s a good spot to find out about fishing. Never been there myself, mind you, but they say it’s a place to go. They got all sorts of information there, for them who like that kind of thing.
So, if you’re plannin’ on doin’ some fishin’ around St. Simons Island, that’s what I know. It ain’t much, but it’s honest. Just remember, fishin’ ain’t just about catchin’ fish. It’s about bein’ outside, enjoyin’ the fresh air, and relaxin’. And if you happen to catch a fish or two, well, that’s just the icing on the cake.
And one more thing, don’t forget your hat and sunscreen. That sun can be brutal out there on the water, especially if you’re sittin’ there all day waitin’ for a bite. And bring some snacks and water, too. Fishin’ can make you hungry, and thirsty. Trust me, I know.
Now go on, get out there and wet a line. And good luck to ya. You’ll need it!
