Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout fishin’ on the Bolivar Peninsula, honey. If you ain’t been there, you’re missin’ out! That place got some of the best fishin’ spots you can find, and I’m gonna tell ya ’bout a few of ’em that’ll make yer day worth the trip. I ain’t no expert, but I know a thing or two ’bout where to throw a line and catch somethin’ good. So sit back, relax, and let me walk ya through the spots that’ll have ya fishin’ like a pro, even if you ain’t never done it before.
The North Jetties – A Must-Go for Any Fisherman
Now, if you ask anyone who knows the area, they’ll tell ya the North Jetties is the place to be. Ain’t no better spot to catch somethin’ good right off the rocks. To get there, you take Highway 87, go down a couple miles, and you’ll see the 17th Street. It’s not far from the Bolivar Ferry Landing, maybe less than two miles, so you ain’t gotta go far. The North Jetty Bait Camp’s there too, so if ya need some fresh bait – live or dead – they got ya covered.
When you’re walkin’ out on them big granite stones, be careful. You don’t wanna trip, trust me, I’ve done it once and hurt my ankle somethin’ fierce. But once you get out there, the fishin’ is real good, especially around June when the water’s warm. And watch out for them sharks, though! They love the waters ’round Crystal Beach more than any other spot in Texas. I remember one time, I caught a big ol’ fish and a shark tried to take it right off the line! I tell ya, that was somethin’!
Crystal Beach – Perfect for Surf Fishing
If you’re into surf fishin’, then Crystal Beach should be high on yer list. It’s a small place, but it’s famous for good fishin’ all up and down the Gulf Coast. Now, let me tell ya, if you get there around sunset, you might catch yourself a nice big one. I’ve seen folks pull out 6-pound specs from the waters there, and that ain’t no small feat. It’s peaceful, and the breeze off the Gulf makes for a mighty fine evenin’ too. Just remember to bring a good cooler for when you catch a big one – the fish here ain’t playin’ around!
Fishing Before Crenshaw School
There’s also a spot just before you get to Crenshaw School that I like to fish. If you’re comin’ from the ferry, just look for the water tower – it’s a big ol’ thing, you can’t miss it. Right before you get to it, you’ll pass by a cemetery on your left-hand side. That’s the area. I’ve had a lot of luck there, and if you don’t mind walkin’ a bit on the rocks, it’ll be worth it. The concrete only runs for a little while, but once you get past that, you’re right on the water. Plenty of fish in them waters if you know where to throw that line.
Rollover Pass – A Hidden Gem
Don’t let that name fool ya, Rollover Pass is one of the best-kept secrets in these parts. It’s a bit outta the way, but that’s what makes it special. The fish here are plentiful, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch somethin’ big. Just make sure you check the solunar fishing times before you go, so you’re fishin’ when the fish are bitin’. Some days, it can be slow, but other days, it’s like they’re all waitin’ for you to cast your line!
Matagorda and Surfside – Worth a Drive
Now, if you’re willin’ to drive a bit farther, I’d recommend headin’ to Matagorda Beach and Surfside Beach. These beaches are north of Corpus Christi, but they got some good fishin’ spots too. Ain’t as busy as the others, so if you want a quieter spot to cast your line and think, it’s worth the drive. Matagorda’s got some good spots for surf fishin’, and Surfside, well, it’s real close to Freeport, so if you’re on that side of things, give it a go!
Galveston Island State Park – Another Big One
Don’t forget about Galveston Island State Park! It’s south of Houston, and it’s a big spot for folks who love fishin’. The state park is known for its peaceful atmosphere, and the fishin’ there is mighty fine. You can either fish from the pier or head out into the surf – either way, you’ll have a good time. It’s one of those places where you can make a whole day out of it, bring the family, and enjoy the beach while you’re at it!
Well, I reckon that’s enough to get ya started. Bolivar Peninsula’s got plenty of spots to fish, whether you like fishin’ from the rocks, surf fishin’, or just sittin’ on the beach and waitin’ for somethin’ to bite. Just remember, the best fishin’ ain’t about the spot, it’s about the patience and the love for the sea. So get out there, cast yer line, and enjoy all the beauty the Gulf Coast has to offer!
