Well, howdy there, y’all! Let’s talk about fishin’ in that there Galveston Bay. I ain’t no fancy fishin’ expert, mind you, but I’ve been throwin’ a line in the water for a good long while, and I reckon I know a thing or two.
What kind of fish you gonna catch?
Now, Galveston Bay, she’s got all sorts of fish swimmin’ around. I hear them fellers talkin’ about “speckled trout,” “black drum,” and “redfish.” Sounds fancy, huh? Them speckled trout, they’re kinda spotty lookin’, real pretty. Black drum? Well, they’re dark, like a drum, I guess. Redfish, they got a reddish tail. Makes sense, don’t it?
But you know what I like catchin’? Anything that bites! I ain’t picky. Big ones, small ones, I’ll take ’em all. Long as they’re big enough to eat, that is!
What kinda bait you gonna use?
Them city folk, they use all sorts of fancy baits. “Live shrimp,” they call ’em. Little shrimps, still wigglin’ and such. And “croakers.” I ain’t sure why they call ’em that, but the fish seem to like ’em.
Me? I like to keep it simple. Sometimes I use worms. Dig ’em up right outta the ground. Good ol’ worms, fish love ’em. Sometimes I use pieces of fish I caught before. Nothin’ goes to waste, you see. Waste not, want not, that’s what my mama always said.
- Live shrimp – City folk like these, fish like ’em too.
- Croakers – Another one of them fancy baits.
- Worms – Good ol’ reliable worms, can’t go wrong with them.
- Cut bait – Use the fish you already caught, nothin’ wasted.
Where you gonna fish?
Galveston Bay, she’s a big place. Lots of spots to fish. Some folks, they go out on boats. Fancy boats, with all the bells and whistles. They got them “fishin’ charters,” where some feller takes you out and shows you where the fish are. Costs a pretty penny, I bet.
Me? I like to keep my feet on the ground. Fishin’ from the shore is good enough for me. Find a nice spot, where the water’s movin’ a bit. Fish like movin’ water, I reckon. Look for places with rocks or weeds, that’s where the fish like to hide.
And don’t forget to check them rules. Them city folk, they got rules for everything. How big the fish gotta be, how many you can keep. Best not to break them rules, or you might get yourself in trouble.
When you gonna fish?
Well, fish gotta eat, just like us. So, they’re bitin’ pretty much anytime. But some times are better than others. Early mornin’, that’s a good time. Before the sun gets too high. And evenin’, when the sun’s goin’ down. Fish seem to like it when it’s a bit cooler.
But you know what? The best time to fish is whenever you can. Whenever you got a little time to spare, and the weather’s nice, go on and throw a line in the water. You might catch somethin’, you might not. But it’s better than sittin’ around doin’ nothin’, that’s for sure.
What else you need to know?
Well, you need a fishin’ pole, of course. And some line. And some hooks. And a bucket to put your fish in. And a hat to keep the sun outta your eyes. And some sunscreen, if you’re one of them folks with sensitive skin.
And most important of all, you need patience. Fishin’ ain’t always easy. Sometimes they bite, sometimes they don’t. But if you keep at it, you’ll catch somethin’ eventually. And even if you don’t, well, you got to spend some time outside, enjoyin’ the fresh air and the sunshine. And that’s worth somethin’, ain’t it?
So, there you have it. My fishin’ report for Galveston Bay. It ain’t fancy, but it’s the truth. Now go on out there and catch yourself some fish!
Keep it simple, keep it fun, and keep on fishin’! That’s my motto.
